Faulty proxy sensor. Common fault.

Try a restore before you book a Genius. It might be software.

Its a known 'issue'. The proximity sensor is a bit flakey, so it doesnt sense when your face is near it properly. Hopefully it will be fixed with a FW revision.

I'm on my 3rd iPhone 4, all same issue. Must be hardware based, so I've given up.
Clearly not fit for purpose, but the fanboy's just shrug, and carry on drinking their latte's. While wearing turtlenecks.
