iphone question?

I have always wanted an iphone but am to tight to get a contract as I would never use the min etc that comes with it, so I am on O2 pay as you go, I am going to get my self a second hand iphone 3gs but just have a quick question? do I have to have a bolt on to go online with the iphone? as I have a sim that if you get txt and internet when you top up £10? the only reason I ask is because my wife has a blackberry and has to have a bolt on to go online?
