Hiya Wongy
I sold the 16V because I started a job (finally!) after my Masters and was able to get something "special" because Ive now got the use of another car and commute by bike and train a lot too. I almost did the 2.0 conversion on the Valver and had even booked it to be fitted - but at the last moment the scrappy turned around and said theyd lost the bottom end! After that, I still had a couple of grand and thought Id sink it into a car that would retain the value a bit better.
I was thinking of all sorts of cars, but when it came down to running costs, insurance and the "Ive always wanted one since I was a boy" appeal, the Willy won. I looked hard for ages and finally found my car - I got really good vibes when I found out it was No. 123! Ive got a funny thing about numbers (Im an accountant you see and keep seeing "172" in all my work - maybe its a message??).
At first, it was really difficult to tell the two cars apart. On the first motorway drive home, it was a lot quieter because of no mods but felt a lot more solid. The suspension is rock hard on the Willy - even more than the lowered 16V I had.
It took a few weeks to appreciate whether the Willy was quicker. In a straight line it doesnt feel like much, although it does paste all the 16Vs Ive met up with time and time again (like 10 car lenghts from 50-100). But you really notice it on the back roads. Really notice it. Its a lot quicker from A to B, mainly IMO due to the suspension being a lot more controllable when its in the middle of its travel. The Willy soaks up all the bumps where the Valver would skip and can get out of slow corners better due to the massive push at about 2500rpm (like the 4500rpm kick in the Valver).
I really miss my old 16V though - especially the leather and the noise. Wish I could have both really.
Id definitely buy a Willy over a Valver, but not unless you can appreciate the extra it gives you. Around town, its about 5% extra. On quiet Welsh B-roads its more like 50%. Just as well I live in Wales!
