Is it just me or am I missing the point

  172
Morning all,

Since buying my 172 I have been looking at lods of old car reviews on good old you tube. I see that the renaultsport clio's always seem to get pitted against the civic type r and the toyota corolla.

Now is it just me or is it a little unfair to be comparing the 172/182 clio's to these cars as both these cars seem to have a lot more horsepower and seem to be more refined all round. I know you have to take into account power to weight ratio as well but any idiot could work out that a type r and even the corolla with nearly 20/30 bhp more as standard will eventually have the legs on a 172/182.

Or is it credit to renault that the clio 172/182's were compared to such brilliant cars and were able to compete to a degree???

its becuase they fell into the same sort of price range when new, the Hondas were always a bit of a bargain. Performance wise they are very similar too, regardless of HP.

There aren't really any comparables to the Clio, it should be pitted against a Fiesta, Polo, Corsa, etc as they are the same class.

However in times passed, other companies didn't offer something comparable so it was upped to Golf, Focus, Megane, Astra size etc

SEAT Ibiza Cupra would be the closest thing I can think of in sector comparison.

Well, the Cupra R anyway

The Mk4 didn't have the R, so it was just the Cupra it was pitted against.

I think the Clio normally came out on top against Type R etc in fan factor. The Mini and the 206 GTI 180 were pretty close in terms of size and performance and price, so there's a few reviews against these too.

My favourite test was the EVO review of the 172 Cup v 180 GTI. Close in terms of overall performance but one clear winner in terms of fun and excitement!

The previous version of the Ibiza had the 180hp Cupra R, which was about teh same time as the 172 came out, but if memory serves, there was quite a difference in price.

I read the 172 -v- ZR 160 Evo test before I chose whether to ditch my ZR, it did help make my mind up, but more of a deal-sealer was that the Clio has mod cons, the old Rover had... well, they are pikey as hell.

the old MG's come to mind every time I see another 1.2 being put through the usual CS cosmetic changes:-

Check out my new bumpers!.... Wel done mate, all the more for that 1.4 to pull along, slowly

Were the Cupra's more expensive? They always seem cheap but that might be compared with VW and Audi.

It's funny that the Clio has always managed to be compared in the super mini section (Fabia, Ibiza, Mini, Corsa, etc) and hot hatch section (Golf, Megane, Astra, etc), even now.

a clio would out do a civic type r on a track, even if it does have less power

Heh. There was a vid on Youtube of a 1*2 catching, keeping pace with and then finally passing a CTR. The comments were hilarious - The Honda fanboys were frothing at the mouth.

Most of em had a point, that it was down to the respective drivers, but boy were some of em pissed.

would still rather have a civic though

this topic comes up time and time again the only thing that makes the clio is the price, cheap fun not bad looking easy to drive
much betters cars out there that do a similar thing but price is the issue for me anyway
