Is it time for a change?

  S2000 & Clio 172
Hi all,

I currently own a 106 gti. It's got a whole range of nice modifications, including pugsport decat exhaust, eccose induction, 4-2-1 manifold, kent pt 51 cams, remap, bilstein sprint line shocks, eibach springs etc. It was RR'd at 160 bhp, did 1/4 mile in 14.8 secs @ 94 mph and handles a dream on and off track.

However, after 3 years of ownership (and loving every minute) I'm wondering whether it's time for a change.

My parents have said they'll give me a couple of grand to spend on a newer car, so I'm now thinking of putting my car on Pistonheads for around 3k (considering the spec) and then looking at buying a Clio 172 cup for around 5k soon.

Is this a good move? or am I making a mistake. I want to have a car about the same speed, handling and enjoyment as I do now - I'm not bothered about comforts, although I will miss the leather in my current car.

I've seen this clio 172 cup on pistonheads and it's swayed me as It looks really nice.

I think the splitter makes a nice subtle difference, does anyone know what it is called and how much it is?

Thanks,

  172 Exclusive... For Sale
Nice Pug, i didn't have the Gti but had the 106 Rallye S2 and had a couple of runarounds before i bought my 172 Cup.

I think you will find the 172 faster and a step-up. But the 106 Rallye was more fun and certainly more raw. However the buzz you get from the Pugsport 106 is different to the Renaultsport Clio, whilst the 106 is chuckable and keeps asking for more, the Clio i found to be more composed as well as potent in power. I think the Clio grows on you where i found the 106 more ready to go, but as it goes i'm enjoying the 172 Cup more each time i drive it...

Remember my car was Rolling roaded at 160 bhp @ fly. When you work out the power to weight you'll find my gti has more power to weight than a 172 (and a cup). I don't expect there to be much in it straight line, or round the twisties to be honest, as gti's handle well standard and I've uprated shocks / springs / etc.

The reason I'm considering the 172 cup is essentially to get a newer car, that has similar performance to my current one.

Anyone with a cup looking to sell (as they need the money) and wanting to Part Exchange for a car that'll be similar performance to what they have but cheaper?

Yep, standard ones are just black plastic.

is it standard on all cups?

this is a 172 cup on pistonheads and it has no splitter

I'm not bothered about the carbon fibre style one, just a black standard one would do - as long as the cup I get has one :)

Your looking at about £140.00 for one from renault if it hasn't got one on it - good bargaining tool too.

The gti looks nice, I like the mods you've done to it they seem good to me:)

I'd go for a spin in a 172 cup & go from there.
