Is my dephaser gone?

Hi,
I've got some lumpy acceleration on my 172 and after changing some parts I just think about dephaser due to some power loss.

I look at the topics on this subject, but I could not find if mine is or not gone.

Thanks a lot,
Radu

Yeah mate your dephaser is absolutely catastrophically fucked.

Get it done along with the belts. I'd also consider doing the water pump.

Definitely dephaser lol, I bet it goes away when it's revved a bit?

Well, the car had the belts done at 140k km, now it has 165k km. That what the previous owner said.
Sorry, I did not understand the question.

Hi mate,

Yeah often the dephaser can be neglected when the belts are done if somebody doesn't understand these cars.

I think your loss of acceleration etc will be due to the belts being done a little wrong and the car being timed up incorrectly. Might be worth getting it checked.

If you rev the car does the noise of the dephaser go away a bit? Is it louder when the engine is hot? All characteristics of the dephaser being gone mate

Hi mate,

This noise is with the engine at normal temperature. When the engine was cold, I can hear a different sound when I press the throttle a little, and when I let to neutral, the same noise appears again. But when the engine is hot that sound is gone. I will go and replace all the belts, it is better to be safe, right?

Thanks
Radu

Sorry for later edit:
Could you please send me a video to hear how does this engine should run?
Thanks

That sounds exactly right mate, that's the symptoms and sound.

Thing is, all engines sound bad over videos, especially these as they're quite noisy engines anyway. I don't have any footage but a YouTube search will find you something I'm sure. The noise of the dephaser will be gone but you can still hear the injectors quite loudly etc, not a quiet engine.

Can I go with this till the next year? I don't have any money right now and in January I will go to Renault Dealer service for belt, dephaser, water pump, aux belt and tensioners.
I just want to be sure that I could not make any damage to my engine, and just because the belt was changed, but just the cam belt.
Thanks for the answer! a lot!

A worn dephaser won't cause any damage to the engine unless it catastrophically fails. That is the worst sounding dephaser I've ever heard though, will need doing as soon as you can!

When was waterpump last done - I was convinced for 6 months my dephaser had gone, until one day my coolant emptied it self on the road - via the worn out bearing on the waterpump. New pump, no noise. (For 6 months until the dephaser did start rattling!!) Very similar sound.

However re-reading your comments about going with temperature very much points to Dephaser.

Hi,
Does now sounds better? I've just replace cam belt, dephaser, aux belt and some other small bits.
Now the car starts way better, so it was also a timing issue before.
Thanks,
Radu

Sounds perfect mate, they never sound a beautiful engine over videos!

That's great. If it's timed up properly now it'll feel more powerful too, especially at the top end

Bet you're glad that's sorted!

Thank you a lot for the reply. The engine seems to be timed properly, the idle is also very smooth and it revs a lot nicer than before.
You are right, after lots of new bith, my car runs as it should. This is my Christmas gift :">
