is this 172 worth it

  Porsche Boxster

hey everyone

I just went to look at a 2002 (august reg) silver 172 yesterday. the guy wants £7,500 for it which i think sounds like a fairly good price. However it does have 42k on the clock and he said to me it just had a service. it has full RSH with all reciepts etc. it has new pads and discs and also a twin exit powerflow exhaust (which looked v.nice, although was surprised as it was pretty quiet!)

A few things that i notied thou........ v small dent/crease on the bonnet (looks like a 4x4 or sommit has backed into it while parking). some scrathces down the drives side door (on the painted plastic bump strip) also 2 of the front alloys r pretty scuffed and will require re ferbishing. tyres have an ok amount of tread all round. interior seemed in fairly good condition, apart from the steering wheel - in the middle some of the leather had pealed away!

also dont all 172s comes with ESP? this one doesnt have it! There is just a bit of plastic where the switch normally is.

I didnt get to have a test drive (have to sort out some insurance for that 1st), but he did take me out and it flew when he put his foot down. felt just as quick as the 172s ive driven in the past. the guy was honest thou and said the clutch was geting pretty stiff - thing that worries me is, does this mean the clucth is on its way out, or just needs some adjusting somehow?

sorry for the rather long post, but do u think its worth the money or should i scout about for a better deal?

cheers

Mike

Early 172 Mk2s came without ESP/cruise/TC.

Price sounds ok-ish. Sounds a bit tatty though - you might find a better one for the same money.

doesnt sound too bad at all really clutch is gettin pretty heavy on mine 02 plate with 36k on it but the clutch itself is fine just had the cable changed this has cleared most of the probs the clutch is still heavy but theres no slipping and the clutch itself seems to be working fine, id say go for it you could haggle him to around £7,200 id say storming price. just check all the electronics bedforehand ie climate contol both the headlights, all could be costly and as for esp it didnt come in untill 52 plate cars. also 42k isnt really all that high in this day and age,

Id personally prefer a 172 without all the electronic wizardry. First button i look for when i get into cars, to turn it off!

Whats book price? You could probably knock him down £500 with that list of problems..

cheers for the replies fellas. the car was up for 7,650 to start with. i tested all the electircs and they seemed to be working fine. a/c, stero, cd player. one of the headlights blew last month and he has just had that replaced. not cheap i understand @ 130 odd for the headlight, plus about 100 odd for fitting  in some ways i would quite like the car, just for the convinence cos the guy lives 5 mins round the corner from me!

i might try and knock him down somemore, but he was fairly reluctant to drop even down to 7500! i think ill wait a few days and see if its still there cos i was the first one to have a look at it. i dont actually need a clio till the end of august, but if i saw one before then at a good price id snap it up :)

book price according to parkers with 20,000 on the clock is between

poor : 6820
good : 8295
the car has twice the milage and isnt in brill condition, so maybe it is a bit overpriced?!
