I was at an internal tech conference a couple of weeks ago and a guy gave a talk about big data and some of the things people are currently working on. Some real outside the box thinking. For example having a phone App that gathers data using the accelerometer and gps location. If a driver hits a pothole in their car it will register on the phone and its location uploaded. If say 10 people all register the same bump at the same location they send someone out to investigate. Proactive pothole maintenanceWorking for one of those places you've mentioned it's definitely a pretty big thing for us.
No idea how best to get into that area though but there's definitely money there

I am guessing Sony will be employing something similar with the announcement they will automatically download games they think you will want. So 1000 gamers have the same game collection as you, 85% downloaded new game demo 'x' so they make the assumption you will like it to.
Interesting stuff.
