its gone bang ! please help !!

basically i was driving the valver on the A12, giving it a bit of stick, but nothing too dractic.

I noticed the oil temp was getting high, so i decided to take it easy (in the hope it would go down)so i drove at 50, i noticed a sort of weird noise on the drivers side, when i accelerated it went away,i wernt happy so i decided to pull over,

when i did the oil light came on & it died on me, i left it for 1/2 hour, as it wouldnt start, when it did & i revved it the noise was now louder, it sounded very tappety, i took it easy and then it just went BANG !! and died.

(i know i shouldnt have drove it,and have made it 100 times worse, but it was already sha**ed)

what is it, i know it will be expensive, my dad said it could be the head ??

there are no leaks etc, all that happens is that the oil temp goes up drastically, until the very loud bang & it dying, it still drove, but the noise was proper loud.

i know its well and truly fcked !!

please help me, !!! thanks

would that make the car sound like a very tappety diesel ??

how much is one of them roughly,

as i am convinced the engine is sh*gged, (im praying its not )

yes as no oil would be getting pumped to the tappets, or any of the engine for that matter

whatever you do, DONT drive it anymore, take it to the closest garage and let them sort it

Yes the engine would get very tappetty becasue the oil is not getting to the tappets !! Dont use the car until you find out what it is !!

Sounds like the oil pump has gone !!

If the oil pump went the the bottom end would seize before your tappets were an issue, along with massive loss of compression, horrid scraping noises..........ergh, dont want to talk about the rest. A failed oil pump isnt the cheaper failure of the 2.

the car does have oil pressure, even when it died on me the 1st time, the oil pressure was still there, which i thought was odd as normally i thought it dropped to zero with the car off.

the oil pressure seemed to be fine (on the guage at 1st) although, when i let it idle the light flickered, so i had to rev it so it didnt cut out again.

i realise that what ever was broken, i have made worse, there is no way that i can drive it (or would use it)

im expecting a very expensive bill - any ideas of roughly how much ??

THe gaugesm are not always very exact. But if you have had preassure when it happend i think its a bearing. Not that expensive to buy.. but heck!! the time it takes!! mine had some kind of that sound shifted i crankshaftbearing and its gone.

But if the car can turn the starter try making a compression test. If that is okay. Check the bearings in the crankshaft. If thats not it.. prob. would be the oilepump ;)

if the oil light flickered dont run it please.

Get the sump off to look at the big end and main bearings.

does it have any oil in it

does it smell burnt? (smell inside the rocker cover)

take the plugs out (do any of them have excessive oil on them)

drain the oil in the sump (does it have any swarf in it or is there any silver colours in it)

if the above is true then you need to remove the sump and take a main bearing cap off..... the middle one, as that is more prone to heat problems when there is an oil problem... if the bearing is blue or pitted etc etc... anything other than smooth and grey...

then it needs a bottom end rebuild at the least....

dont ask me costs as it all depends what damage has been done..... almost impossible to quote for that one I am afraid...

i have looked at the spark plugs & the oil is on the porcelain & the nut part of the plug.

the electrodes of the plugs are more or less the proper colour (with no oil on them)

it appears, oil has come in from the top of the rocker cover on to the plugs.

the water & the oil are the right colours and dont appear to be contaminated.

i do however now have a few drops of water under the car, but the levels are correct.

in order to shed some light on things, i will try to get one of those gunson dignostoic testers.

sounds like something serious like an end shell or something has decided to let go. the engine wants stripping to check but if you drove it to the point where it went bang and stopped then youve probably drove it to destruction and its past repair.

drain the sump mate....

take off sump..

electronic tester will not show much me thinks with this problem...

oh great !!

i sort of guessed it was well sh*gged, but i never realised by how much !

i cant wait for a huge repair bill ! (not)

worth getting some preliminary checks done, i.e. sump off and check the mains before you write it off completely....

but I do agree with Jay, when things go like that often other damage is done internally due to lack of oil or particle contaimination...

No luck mate

Whatever you do dont take it to Renault, the head went on mine last year so i took it to Renault thinking theyll know how to fix it seeing as the AA guy never had a clue.

20mins after dropping it off they phoned and said it was dead and i needed a new engine that would only cost £3000!!!!

Took it down the road my local and he listened to it, said it sounded like the head gasket and i picked it up 5 days later with a £450 bill. Stay clear of Renault.

cheers for the advice folks,

i would put a willy lump there, if i were keeping it,

however i was planning on selling it in a few months, but im keeping it for a bit until i can afford a newer car.

the engine im having has done 60k (i think it will be cheaper & work out best if i just swap the engine) & im probably going to have the cam belt done while the new engine is out of the car.

im having a few other things done as well (no tuning tho) so it will be ok in few weeks.
