John’s Titanium 182 Track Project

  Clio 182
Would people be interested in an update on this car?

I purchased it from John a few years back.

17th of November 2018, this little beauty came into my life. I paid a pretty penny at the time for it but as we can all see from this build thread, it’s one of the most well sorted Clios out there. Testimony to this is that fact that I have down around 20 track events with only one that I couldn’t drive home from.

A little about myself, I have owned a few RS clios over the years and have had this track car and pretty standard 182 as my daily for the last few years.
I also have a Mk2 Golf track car with a. 1.8 turbo engine.

I’ll try get some pics and stuff added from my ownership during the last few years.

Looks great, I love the golf. Such a clean looking car. Vw’s just get better with age! We need to see a build thread on your road car too! There are a few titanium clio builds happening now. It’s the new racing blue!

Had the car for one day and went straight to Knockhill for a track day with none other than the Famous Mr Mcnab on towing duties. Cheers Boss!

Car ran very well on track but unfortunately I was plagued by the red light of doom at the lunchtime break! The light was solid and the fuel pump wouldn’t prime and the car would only turn over two or three times, looks like I have bought a lemon [emoji23] (This will be a running theme and I will detail on the extreme measures I went to, to fix this issue as we go on. )

One quick call to John and he advised on a temp repair and we were away again, the car completing the afternoon session with no more issues and resulting in me dipping into the 59’s on my first time out. Needless to say that I was very happy.

One thing that I didn’t like about the car was the lack of power steering, as John had cut as much weight as possible from the car, so first modification was decided, electric power steering!

So after a successful shake down at the first track day, (November 2018) I quickly realised that I could not comfortably drive the car on track with no power steering. I felt that no power steering definitely had a massive negative effect on my ability to control the car on the limit and during any slides etc.

There was no way I wanted to refit the heavy and potentially troublesome hydraulic system so another option was required!

Thankfully fitting the EPAS from the smaller engined cars is pretty straight forward.

The column with motor is a direct fit, it comes with the ECU and only requires a small interface box that is readily available from EBay. ( I think it gives the ecu a speed signal bypass or something) The interface kit I chose aloud gives you a rotary switch so you can adjust the assistance on the fly.

I am no mechanic, so the wiring etc isn’t of any great standard but I followed @steffraylle’s very comprehensive fitting guide on eBay (), with the whole job taking no more than a few hours. ( the fact that I have only a small dash top made the job much quicker.

I wired up the steering to a switch on the dash, as in certain circumstances, it’s pretty handy having the ability to turn the steering on, without actually having the engine running.

For me, this transformed the car into something far far easier to drive and now gave me confidence on the limit and when things go wrong.

All in I think it cost me a few hundred pounds and I would recommend this to anyone looking to simplify a track Clio.

After the power steering conversion, I wanted to get the car on the road again as I have to drive the car too and from Knockhill.

The car had headlight blanks, no MOT etc and also had a very neat but very minimal wiring loom, this was causing some electrical issues with indicators etc and I was convinced that it had something to do with the intermittent immobiliser issues.

With the help of Chris at FGS(absolute hero), we decided that new loom would probably be the best way to move forward.

I stuck some headlights into the car, sold the blanks and sourced a 182 loom from Stu Robertson.

The car was dropped off with Chris and the work was undertaken, he also fitted a rain light and plumbed in my fire extinguisher as I knew I wanted to do some form of racing in the car.
