So after a successful shake down at the first track day, (November 2018) I quickly realised that I could not comfortably drive the car on track with no power steering. I felt that no power steering definitely had a massive negative effect on my ability to control the car on the limit and during any slides etc.
There was no way I wanted to refit the heavy and potentially troublesome hydraulic system so another option was required!
Thankfully fitting the EPAS from the smaller engined cars is pretty straight forward.
The column with motor is a direct fit, it comes with the ECU and only requires a small interface box that is readily available from EBay. ( I think it gives the ecu a speed signal bypass or something) The interface kit I chose aloud gives you a rotary switch so you can adjust the assistance on the fly.
I am no mechanic, so the wiring etc isn’t of any great standard but I followed @steffraylle’s very comprehensive fitting guide on eBay (
), with the whole job taking no more than a few hours. ( the fact that I have only a small dash top made the job much quicker.
I wired up the steering to a switch on the dash, as in certain circumstances, it’s pretty handy having the ability to turn the steering on, without actually having the engine running.
For me, this transformed the car into something far far easier to drive and now gave me confidence on the limit and when things go wrong.
All in I think it cost me a few hundred pounds and I would recommend this to anyone looking to simplify a track Clio.
