Juddering when moving off!?

Ali

  V6, Trackhawk, GTS
I'm going to draw my own conclusion from this...

Other than the fact the clutch cable is stiff and notchy meaning it's hard to move off the car struggles to move away!

Engine mounts?

So used to the Vee that the 172 is just hard work to drive!

I think its the mounts...Probably never had them done. on 50k so...Worth doing!

Feels like it's gonna stall everytime i move off on the clutch!

well ur describing the same symptoms i had mate :(

my clutch is hit of miss mate, judders on take off or is very pingy :Sif that makes sence, clutch cable is stiff! i dont see it being a problem as im used to it now! been like that since i got the car so might just be normal. let me know how you get on as my gearbox is getting very notchy in 1st 2nd and 3rd.

  Golf TDI
i have the same pulling away in 1st , judders quite a bit , im used to it now ! although i would love to know what it was and sort it . i seem to think it may be connected to the fact once in a while i struggle to get it into reverse :S how much is a new clutch cable ? and how big of a job is it ?

  Golf TDI
i had the suspicion thats what it could be but if its on its way out , its on its way out ! so im not going to lose sleep over it ..although i havnt heard of a thrust bearing ?

  rps13
yeah count me in too.

i stall that thing like 4 times a day in traffic

just really juddery when pulling away

let me know how this develops!

Guys, on a level road try lifting the clutch pedal very slowly to start the car moving without giving any gas! I`m thinking it might be something to do with the fly-by throttle in some cases. Mine happens if i actually use the throttle whilst im lifting the clutch. If i start the car moving without the throttle its smooth. Its almost like there is a dead spot on the throttle pedal and the car nearly stalls.

^ Sammy, defo not that! i'm almost sure it's a combination of the clutch cable and Mounts.

On my old 172 the cable needed replaced, but it didn't vibrate/judder...

release bearing?

can be called both, wont be these, you will here a metal on metal wurring noise at a certain rpm like 3-4000rpm.

it does feel like theres a dead spot in the electronic thottle pedal (gay!)
bring back the cable then we would know.

Mine did this and with a car full of people on an incline it was worse and really hard to pull away smoothly. GDI took a look and the clutch and gearbox were fine really, it was just the springs on the clutch plate that had weakened over time, thus causing the slight judder and crap pulling away, since changing the clutch and cable its been a dream to drive.

But he is talking about the later 172 TB i think ; not the phase 1 cable TB.

I've also read that the later one can go "spastic" (?) , opening and closing - juddering..
Only when opening throttle completely it opens up. When giving little throttle it judders, it can be checked by removing filter and looking at the butterfly while someone handles the throttle.

erm, CLUTCH lol

classic symptoms of the clutch plate springs being worn/soft. The springs are there to damp engagement, if they're loose they wont be doing their job so you get a judder

yep YOU are all talking about the clutch..

Sammy however was talking about another possible pault; the throttlebody . Quote ; " I`m thinking it might be something to do with the fly-by throttle in some cases"

This one (when faulty) can also go funny/twitching when giving little throttle.
Reaction would be just like Ali stated ; juddering when driving off.

Do'nt worry , i read before i react. (in this case backing sammy's statement up. )

specsavers anyone ?

6hrs! you having a bubble? takes less than that to get the motor out do 10 star jumps and put it bak in!

Thing is, i'm gonna do the cable and mounts...on the basis that i beleive there needed, and failing that i'll have a look at the ^ above mentioned.

That may not be it ya camel! lol

I'll tick the cheap boxes first! I've seen the GDI approach to problem solving! lol - Normally involved stripping things bak to bare components! I'll try and avoid that if i can!

Cheers for input tho!

Ive just had my clutch changed and now my Clio has developed this fault!

As well as the juddering when pulling off (at the biting point) ive also noticed when my foot is down fully on the clutch and i hit a bump in the road ive got a metal on metal knock.

The solution above is the clutch plate springs, surely this would have been changed during the new clutch being fitted?

M

mini-valver

The springs are part of the clutch friction plate assembly. When you change the cluthc, you should have a kit which has the friction plate, casing and release bearing. If you've had the clutch changed and it's rattling, I'd say the casing isn'nt tight on the flywheel, not the spring assembly.
