Just about to upgrade to Vista....

Just read the little booklet thing

"You will need to reinstall all programes that were not supplied with your HP computer."

I take it that upgrading my system is going to wipe everything??

doing the upgrade takes about 2 hrs and the clean install takes about 20 mins, your programs will still be on your computer, but might have to do all the shortcuts again, best bet is a clean install

If it's a HP laptop that isn't Vista certified, be vary aware that you might find it near impossible to get any AC97 audio drivers to work.

I've got the HP upgrade disks. Be interested to know how you get on. Think i may hold off for a while before i actualyl upgrade - my laptop is ok as it is, and i know that all my software works currently, where as i get the impression that this may not be the case with Vista

Out of my 3 PCs, two are now happily running Vista.

My Vaio AR31 came with Vista so that's no surprise. TheBeast2 is running it fine save for the fact I'm not happy with my 7950GX2 performance. That leaves my Vaio TX3 that I use for business, so for now, it may be safer to keep that on XP, especially as it's not very powerful.

There's also my old HP zd8000 which has Vista but no audio. I must get around to putting a copy of XP back on that machine and flogging it.

I'm thinking of putting Vista on my Vaio, won't have any problems running it but still not sure. Think will just buy a new laptop instead...

Run the Vista Upgrade Advisor. It can give you a good idea of what problems you may have. It's not 100% reliable, but it will at least tell you if you need to uninstall any programs before an upgrade. The shady area appears to be drivers. You're playing a driver lottery by upgrading IMO. Vista is still in its infancy really, but tbh I love it and couldnt go back.

My business Vaio still runs XP but that may change soon.

im going to hold back on vista. wait till all the bugs are ironed out. I ran one of the beta versions and it was appauling. I just hope it doesn't take as long to get vista running relativley stable as it did xp.

No point really in waiting (if you want it) as it's already stable. Any version you use will be updated through the course of time anyway so it's not like you'll have an old version. If you like playing around with your PC then you'll love Vista. If you have the ability to address any issues yourself i.e. you're not a computer leper, then you'll get on just fine with it IMO :)

I'm liking it to be honest. only a few niggly bits i'm getting used to.

love the look and feel of it though :):)

i just found the beta version to be crap. it didn't run smooth and i've heard bad reveiws about vista and games

My experience of games so far is luke warm to be fair. MY 7950GX2 performs pretty poorly in STALKER and not much better in FEAR. I'm in a transitional period though, as Vista is the future...DX10 is here. It will get better with newer games and drivers in the coming weeks and months. I would probably revert TheBeast2 back to XP if I had the time to play games on it just now...
