Just Bought A 172 PH1

  120d M-Sport
Hi all,

As you can all probably see am pretty new to this forum but not new to Renault due to already having a megane lol, anyway last month my friend took me for a spin in his 172 ph1 that he got off his mate a week before, i loved the car that much i told him to tell me when he was selling, in which he asked me how much i would pay, after i laid down my offer he said he would let me know :D so i found this forum and it looked extremely helpful and looked like there are aload of friendly people here, now am a paid member due to getting the clio on Christmas Eve :rasp:

But the car does not sound too good at the mo, for some reason it sounds like its misfiring when started, the sevice light is on and the airbag light is on oh and the handbrake can reach 8 clicks  The car has done 115k not a good sign espically with no service history but its HPI is clear so thats a good thing i guess.

Can anyone diagnose the misfiring sound as mentioned? Could it be down to needing a good service or does it lie deeper that that? :dapprove:

Any help would be greatly appricated, oh and of course a pic can be uploaded if i must :p Also i could take a video of the sound when started if it would help :)

Oh and if anyone knows a company who will insure a 19year old in a 172 please let me know :)

Thanks in advance to anyone that replies :D

the sevice light is on and the airbag light is on

Hmm try moving the passenger seat and fiddling with the wires undereath the seat. Im sure its a common problem. After a few jiggles and a few seconds they should go out?

Unless it is due for a service?

Thanks in advance to anyone that replies :D

On that one, be prepared to get raped :)

Hi Paul, thanks for the reply :)

Well ive been told its due for a service, most likely needs 1 badly after the abuse its taken recently,

Ill give the passenger seat trick a go tomorrow when i get in from work :D

EDIT: Oh and i know insurers wont want to touch me but if anyone can confirm Kwik Fit/Zurich do 3rd Party Extention when fully comp then i guess ill be going fully comp instead of my current 3rd party plan! :p

do you know if its had a cambelt change??

id get that checked ASAP.
the noise could be something that needs replacing, like spark plugs etc. does the car misfire when driven??

Why did your mate only keep it for a very short time? :S

Hope you got it cheap cheap if its got issues.

With insurance, it'll be very high, but if you consider it worth it then no issue to it. Just have to try everyone mate. Elephant seem to be good for younger drivers, not sure on what they'd say for a 172 though.

Hi Garf, ive been told its had its cambelt changed but ive no proof of this, is there anyway i could check myself, sadly im not as technical minded as most on here with engines and stuff, just know of odd bits, it sounds not bad when being driven just when stationary you can hear the noise like its stuttering through the exhaust if that makes sense? lol

Ive just ordered some bosch spark plugs off ebay, hoping that it will do the job, but i dont have much luck with things and i bet it will lie deeper than this :dapprove:

Hi Vish, basically my mate was driving it for free cos he never actually bought it off his mate lol he was just using his 3rd Party Extention, and my mates mate was selling the car due to quinn direct cancelling his insurance which led to my mate driving it instead lol if all that makes sense? Lmao

£1800 is the price but comes with a private plate which isnt great tbh just has YOH at the end lol

Ill try get a quote with elephant, thanks alot for that :D

Misfire could be due to coil pack (common problem) we have them in stock.

SERV light isn't to do with servicing oddly it comes on at the same time as warning lights to tell you to take it to the dealer basically, so when you get rid of the airbag light that will go off also. As said above usually the wires under the seat.

its hard to tell if the cambelt had been changed, but i would have thought so if its still going on 115k. best to get it checked at a renault specialist to be safe. the noise could be the exhaust at idle, or when cold, or as josh says the coilpack.

i would say get it fully serviced, plugs, oil change and oil filter, check air filter isnt dirty or needs replacing.

i recently forked out near to £600 for a cambelt change and new hydraulic lifters. if things go wrong its not cheap.

Hi Josh forgive me for saying this but where does the coil pack go haha and how much are they bud? :) Also is it a easy fit?

Cheers for that info your the 2nd to say about being the wires under the seat, must be a really common problem!

coil pack is at the back of the engine bay, your ht leads plug into it. its a black rectangular box. most probably underneath the engine cover if its got one. very easy to replace. not sure how much they are

I do intend to get a specialist to look at it soon as ive finished paying for the car and its insured, thats alot of monry you've spent on the car!! Hope i dont have to :dapprove: Im also looking at getting a K&N Induction Kit which would be good for the car also :)

Fantastic! Thanks for that bit of info! Thats what made me join this forum! :D

It actually still does have the engine cover, infact pretty much everything is standard on the car, even the exhaust and rims! Apart from its got lexus lights which dont look bad but im set on getting PH2 rear lights :rasp:

i wouldnt bother fella, open induction kit will make you lose power. keep the standard airbox and put a panel filter in. much better to keep induction closed.

Sorry I dont want to go off the subject, but just wana say nice car and how did you get the Inlet Manifold to look like that lol was it alot of elbow greece and metal polish?

Thanks Mate

  Golf R/Leon FR
cheers fella ^

just bought a 'project pack' of sand paper from halfords, that contains different grades of sandpaper and wet and dry. start with the roughest grade and work your way through. takes alot of work and very very sore fingers. then just use metal polish after every so many stages and see how it looks.

or you can go to a metal polishers and they will do it for you.

How much of a mate was he lol?

Has it got any reciepts or service history at all? Might help in diagnosing the problem if certain bits have been recently changed.

A missfire would most likely be down to either Leads or CP (coilpack)

Also I hate to say it but if the plugs need changing you'd be best off getting some NGK's I forget the code but if you search around you'l find it. Which are more expensive than Bosch but better. See whats in there already in it and what type

Also don't just shell out on new parts, try and think about the problem logically by fault finding etc save wasting money on bits you don't need!!

  120d M-Sport
Note take on the keeping the standard airbox Garf :D

Your clio looks so much nicer than mine, guess you can tell when cars have been around the block hey!! Ill try upload a pic now :rasp:

No probs for going off subject Dazza tis is a very nice car after all!! ;)

He is a good mate from school Matt, he knows just as much about the car as me, it came from Leeds from what i can see on old MOT's (thats all i have)

I got 4 MOT's since 2004, the deed to the plate and the V5, thats about it

This is why i made this topic to try find out more of the problem, but its hard to fault find when you dont know much about engines lol and hard to describe the fault haha and money is the key at the moment when im saving up to pay the rest of this car off while trying to fix it at same time :dead:

Dude I wasn't being fesicious with my last comment its just I don't think that putting new spark plugs in will cure the issue thats all.

A 172 with 100k+ on it will need a lot of wear and tear bits and bobs replacing. To get it upto a standard that I myself would be happy with would cost about £500-600 possibly more I know thats not what you wanna hear though.

Do you have the mechanical knowledge to change basic service items? Oil, filters, plugs etc..?

If he's a good mate try and find out what he's replaced on it out of interest it will help us diagnose the fault and give you a better idea of what state of health the car is in! Although one would have hoped youd done this bevore you bought it lol

What price did you get it for?

@ Garf the megane will indeed be going for sale, such a nice car for 92k got leather headrests with 7" TVs, tinted windows and 17" ACE alloys, looks really nice and the silver colour really tops it off. I can upload pics if you want to see it

I have basic mechanical knowledge on a basic service and where a few bits are but nothing more really, my mate replaced nothing on the car pal, tbh if anything hes made it worse lol. It cost £1800 and dont worry i know your only trying to help :D

Cool, well at least you didnt pay over the odds really.

Now first thing on the list in my book would be a major service followed by any wear and tear items that need sorting! Last but not least give it a good clean lol.

Once its all upto scratch you can enjoy it for what it is a damn fun car for the money!

Definatly needs a good clean, you should of seen the inside of the car, couldnt believe the back of the handbook had been used for roach material lol.

Dont want to lose my license quick tho lol

Ok, gave the wires a jiggle under the passenger seat and there still on :dapprove:

Guess it does need a service lol

At least you didn't pay over the odds for it. The missfire could be down to any number of things, coil pack, leads, plugs the list goes on.
If it was me I would be doing a full service on it and a cambelt before I did anything.
Mine had the cambelt done at bang on the 5yr mark in Jan 2005, im already considering getting it done again early.
Mine will be getting a full service in January, my view is if your going to drive it hard,
which I do you need to look after it.
In terms of the warning lights you may need to get it on a diagnostic machine to see where the problem lies, it could have been crashed, had the seat sewn up and requires an air bag computer, more likely its the wiring under the passenger seat.
Get it into Renault and put on their clip machine, will only cost your half an hours labour for a clip test and that will tell you why the air bag light is on and the cause of a miss fire. Its not worth messing about in the cold for the sake of £35.

Hi Alex, indeed your right, maybe best taking to Renault to get tested out, at £35 its a steel to find out if alls well, I actually started the clio again before to get a vid of the sound of misfiring but it didnt seem to sound that way today :S If anyone wants ill upload the video though not much can be seen becuase it was dark when i woke up... No am not a vampire before any 1 asks lol
