Just bought a 182....couple of questions.

  clio 182
hi guys, Im new to Renault and have just bought a 182 as a daily run around.

So its a silver 182 with i believe a spoiler pack. low mileage of 44000. There are a few issues. front and rear bumpers need some paintwork, but i noticed that the front wings are a different shade or appear to be in different light conditions and angles. I realise there plastic so assumed that its normal? the obvious thought that it had been bumped but the car looks straight and hpi clear.

The exhaust is blowing! seems to be blowing where it joins to the cat, apparently this is because the lad had replaced the handbrake cable and had to remove the exhaust to do so, he says he lost the olive/seal? also is the cable a common problem as its seems to have been done a few times!

There is sometimes a knock when going over speed bumps, any ideas as to what i caould be? passed the mot and has 12 month remaining.

Sorry for the long post but thought id get it all in one go.

Thanks Liam.

Colour change is common due to plastics as you say.

Exhaust blow at that joint is also common, best way to fix it is to sleeve the cat.

Knock will prob be suspension related, hard to diagnose online but have a look if it's a major concern.

  Volvo S40
The knocking could also be the exhaust. Either at the rear due to perished rubber mounts or on the subframe due to excessively worn dogbone mount bushes.

However if it only happens when going over speedbumps it's probably more likely to be suspension as mentioned above.

172/182 clios were made in two shades of silver. Replacement wings might be a cause for colour change. And Renault didn't make the exhausts to last on mk2s so hanger/cat/section joints commonly erode away after time.

Welcome to CS . As said above the blowing exhaust will be either the oilve joint , where it connects to centre section or the manifold to Cat fitting kit will need replacing, or both . Both are rubbish and are common failures on the exhaust . I wouldn't worry about the different shade on the wings , silver really shows it up more with them being plastic . I had the same on my 172 and they were the original wings when I bought it from new .
Handbrake cables do snap , but usually quite a long time . Better off replacing them in pairs as the old one will have stretched over time .

am not sure you have to remove the exhaust for the break cable, just take the heat shield off..near the cat you will see 2 springs with a bolt in, if the springs move, need replacing, comes in a set, like someone said, only buy genuine ,( Renault Clio 182 Exhaust Fitting Kit Front to Manifold ,6000073668 £26)
check under the rear exhaust heat shield for rackles, they do rot easy around the bolt, just put a bigger washer on them. i put plastic washers on mine..

  BG Clio 182
Since I installed my new fitting kit the springs are now almost totally compressed, before they were almost totally expanded.

  182 ff
mine was the same, could spin them..for such little money, its an easy fit ,i put 2 lamda senors on mine,at the same time,, it was a different car...couldn't believe it.....fitted a polybush dog bone, that changed the car too.and the ebach sportlines,/ dampers/top mounts and yoko(forgot the name but was £500 )tyres , braided brake lines, new dics pads..
next car am getting, i am doing my homework 1st.....guess you only really get to know a car, when you have bought it..if i knew now ,what i knew then,no way i would of bought the car..guess its a learning curve..
i am an expert on 182s now and a lot poorer ha..

  clio 182
So the exhaust is fixed, the cat to system clap was loose. But now he car is sluggish at points through the Rev range. It's spluttering.

The engine management light has just flash for 2 minutes and gone off again....

Help?

  BG Clio 182
Check the wiring/connectors for the lamda sensors, you might have hit a connector or something while you were working on it.

  182 ff
Everything seems to be fine......

Ahhh I'm starting think I've been sold a dog...
maybe the lamda sensors. They will be over 10 years old now ,i would change your plugs and filters/oil too..if they haven't been changed ..
what mpg are you getting? when mine was faulty, down to 15 mpg around town, and the light came on and off..
am sure your car will be fine..just wants abit care and attention.. depends what money you have to spend..

the car will be ok,if its all sorted, cars tend not to like, monkeys with a spanner playing around with them..you may find a few more faults..i had the whole Gibraltar monkeys population, working on mine before I got it ha

  clio 182
To be fair I'm probably being a pre Madonna.....

The cars been serviced at 12000, 26781, 29402, 31871, 35373, 38162 and finally 39264. The cambelt and tensioner were done on the 31871 service.

The cars sitting at 45000 now so it was last serviced at the start of the year. I just didn't expect to find this fault this soon as the car was running great before I fixed the blowing exhaust.

Just checked the mpg now it's stuttering and it around 16mpg!

Thanks for the reply everyone.

What area are you in ,might be near a specialist on here? I dropped too 18mpg with failed precat ran like a dog.Im sure your 182 was on ebay few weeks back.It looked very nice

I'm north wales chester area.
It's running like a bag of spanners, really stuttering, sluggish on power and generally sounds unhealthy. It's just strange how it only happened after fixing the exhaust clamp. Ran like a dream before that.

Hoping that it's only the lambda, heard story's of coil packs, spark plugs ect.

look on there,, bosch ones.. £61 each..make sure you have not pulled any wires out.. if they do required replacing. Get 2.they are both the same.. don't buy any until you know..get under the car again and check all the wires..and its connection .. take it a garage get it plugged into a diagnostic machine..if they don't charge you a arm and a leg..then you will know straight away.. down to 16mph.sounds like a lambda senor..

I plan on going over everything I can think tomorrow. Check plugs and coil pack. Then on tO the injectors. If all seems fine then I'm assuming that it's the lambda.
Is there any fore of self diagnosis you can do. Vauxhall have a pedal test for example.

Thank you again.

Oh dear, Chanel the pre cat lambda today and it's still the same...... I want to cry!

Any suggestions? I may undo the exhaust again and see if that makes a difference!

  BG Clio 182
Clogged cat? The symptoms actually sound a lot like injectors. I think you can check them with a multimeter and see which one is different than the others, but Im not sure.

I'd like to sort it out myself to be honest.
I'm now moving to plugs injectors. Any ideas on how to test both are working.

If I cannt sort after this the it's the dreaded garage!

if your local to them, pop down and ask advice, when you can,. because if you don't know what your doing, can make more faults finding faults. Remember the car was fine, before you had a go of it ha..its ok people giving advice on here, they cant see the car..just guess work..why would it have the fault, after you was messing with it? you might of caused it.. has water got in any where? its never stopped raining..

I'll give them a bell, there not so much local but there not too far.

We literaly tighten the exhaust clamp as it was loose... I have a little suspicion that the lad has loosneed it as he knew there was a problem.

I've take the inlet of. Tops of plugs look wet and corroded. Almost like oil but doesn't smell of oil. I'll take them out tomorrow and have a look see.

I should mension that I'm not just bashing hammers, I'm actually a mechanical engineer. I just need pointing in the direction as I'm used to vx ha

I am a mechanical engineer ha and a bike mechanic....go back to your vx .. ha... why would tightening the exhaust cause a problem? if you took it all off it would still run.. but loud as feck... ha.. I said the rain, had a lot.. my car wouldn't start due to the relays getting damp.
.if you took all the lambda senors off, wouldnt it still run ok,but use a lot of fuel?
your leads might be damp..so not firing properly. The exhaust may just be a coincidence, and is throwing you off..
maybe I know nothing..but the exhaust is after the bang has occurred. Sounds like the problem is before the bang..if you know what I mean..

Wouldn't of thought that fixing an exhaust leak would case a problem, but instantly after doing the clamp I have this problem haha.

I'll carry on tomorrow. Rain has stopped play.

I'm starting to wish I'd of kept the vx haha

should put a video up to hear it, there are real experts on here(fred from Birmingham)..they can point you in the right direction.. .when my lambda senor went, the engine ran fine, just used loads of fuel..and failed the mot on emissions. What ever the fault it,it is small...not major. Just ignoring..

Sooo. It would appear that wet plugs and leads were the problem. Plugs were dripping and red. Cleaned and dried them. Put them back in. Leads looked worse for ware on the inside so a wick trip to ecp and a new set later. Wooooooo she's running !

that's good.. least its sorted now..the moral of the story is, remember your basic fault finding steps ha

  clio 182
I had to start somwhere. Having the problem arise as soon as the exhaust was fixed threw me. Also having the problem within the week of having the car wasn't ideal ha.

It cost £20 for the new leads. And another 60 odd for the lambda although ended up not needing it... but hey ho atleast it's done and fixed. Plus I enjoyed it to an extent and learned a fair bit!.

Need to sus out that knock now and get the bumpers painted.... then maybe ill end up doing other stuff

  dan's cast offs.
cheap leads will give you problems in pretty much no time, worth chucking a set of genuine ones on for what they cost.

  clio 182
To be honest I bought them to see if that was the problem and needed to do it today. If they don't last then ill buy some different ones.
