Just bought a valver!! but...

  Valver

First off, f**k me its a nice car...

Lol anyway few littles bits n bobs that need doing, how hard are these to do/how expensive?

-Some of the dash lights dont work, behind speedo/extra dials.

-The little display by the speedo is flashing and just reads -30c??? Also is there meant to be a switch on one of the stalks for the screen?

-Only the oil pressure guage works, other two just stay on zero?

-Little bit of play on the steering, ie doing about 60 u can tap the wheel up and down a few cm and its totally loose.. Although have receiptss from previous owner for new steering rack...

Apart from that, its awesome, brings a grin to my face everytime I drive it :D

1- changing the bulbs is a pain in the arse to do. but cheap enough

2- maybe the temp sensor isnt connected or knackered, little nobble on underside of passenger wing mirror

3- the other two are level and temperature. one should come on when u first turn the ignition and jump up to show level. (have u checked by dipstick to make sure u have enough oil in it?) then itll turn off when driving.

temp should obviously build up as driving, maybe disconnected behing dash, have a look when u change bulbs, or maybe sensors are knackered in engine. easy to change to

4- steering column! get it fixed ASAP! before u loose steering! and mine took like a 3 week wait for a new renault one from france!

Cheers!

its got m3 style mirrors on, Im not a great fan of them so might switch back to normal ones...

One of my friends said it could be a knackered joint at the bottom of the steering column? Ive a receipt for a new one within the past year, surely it couldnt have broken that fast?

yea pull the stupid mirrors off and get ya propper ones back connected as i expect the m3s arnt heated either.. so crap in winter.

def get that steerin fixed and dont go blastin it without gettin it looked at incase u end up in a fence! id say if the racks done its the column then

play in the steering is the coloum, bulbs are easy to change should take half hour from start to finish, as for the -30 thing on the dash, its doing it because the sensor has been removed due to the mirrors changing. you can stop it by removing the relay for it in the inside fuse box, on the passenger side foot well.

  Valver

So I have to get a whole new column?? :( arent they like 200 squid, + labour!

Anyone know if there is a controller on the stalk for the display?

display reads -30c because m3 mirrors dont have temp sensor in - hook em up to the original mirrors and boom, temp is shown.

confused over oil dials - only time ive seen the one work and not the others is in an RT thats had the oil dials put in and been hooked up to oil level (the only sender for the three oil dials in an RT), but im sure its not the case :p

the guage which shows how much oil you have in the car (far left) will only stay at the oil level for about 10secs when turning the ignition on, after that it drops, so it looks like there is no oil in the car.
this guage is only a guide & cant be relied upon 100%

  Valver

Ok admittedly havent had a look if it went up when I turned the ignition... but the other one definately is not working!!

With the steering, just to double check... When the car is stationary, there is no play at all, you move the wheel a cm the wheels move (with the engine+power steering on).. its when you hit about 60ish you can kind of feel a little bit where you tap the wheel about 1cm either way and its loose and the wheels dont move...

Also im a lil worried about this high pitched noise, about 3k revs+ you can hear a really high pitched noise which gets louder as the revs increase, is this normal :S

cheers guys!

  Valver

Still makes noise with clutch down/up and gearbox in neutral/in gear so cant be the bearings!

take it to a good knowledgable garage id say and get it a good looking at! better to get it fixed now before its gonna cost tons more when anything properly fuks on you

Just noticed a small leak on the o/s near the tracking rod, seems to be coming power steering fluid, but its a very slow leak... Could this be causing the problems?

just had my steering column done on my rsi got a second hand one off low milage car at £70, new over £160 tuck my mate about 3hrs to take out and put back also wheel bearing went last week so replace both front and track rodends not good week for me.

thats why the temp gauge is reading -30, the sensor isnt connected as its in the OE mirror on the passenger side

Previous owner if they had been thinking properly should have taken the mirror apart and relocated the temp sensor. When i changed the mirrors on my old valver i just had the sensor dangling down the inside of the door by the hinge so that it couldnt be seen but still worked.

re the oil dials, take the top of the dash off (only takes a minute to do) and check the connectors. They do come loose sometimes.

1. Change the bulbs
2. Change the mirrors to original
3. Check the backs of the dials. My connections were loose and gave the same problem.
4. Get the tracking checked. Ill bet you its toe-ing out.

RE the whining, its probably a wheel bearing so get those checked over.

you should have NO play at all in the steering. both have problems then, and they will get worse!

Thanks for all the advice! lol and tom I was kidding about giving you a run for your money ;)

Saw a column being changed the other day so yeah looks like the joint is on the way out hence the play :(

I fixed all the blown bulbs, but the dial still isnt working! Which connectors were you referring to? are there ones in the dash itself?

Although I took it to a mechanic today who couldnt hear the noise I was on about at all! Maybe Ive just got high pitched hearing :S

The connectors on the back of the oil dials. Unplug them and give the contacts a clean up with some meths or white spirit.

Cheers :D

What connectors exactly? Theres only one large connector which plugs into the back of the whole unit?
