It is the same with black too, you never see many black 172s for sale ! When looking for my 172 I reckon 90% of the 172 MKIIs for sale were silver ! I ended up find a blue one which also seems to be rare, they all seem to be rare except for silver as that must be the most popular colour by a long way.

Black is almost as common as silver.

Red and Blue are the rarer colours, hence my search for a red one

Black is NOWHERE near as popular on Auto Trader as Silver, no way ! Not in terms of cars for sale it isnt. Look on Auto Trader and do a NATIONAL search for 172s and tell me how many Black 172s you find and how many Silver 172s you find !

Red is rare but you have to ask why ? Because not a lot were sold in that colour maybe ? Whatever colour the 172 is it still looks gorgeous IMHO ! Any colour would do me...... except Silver ! LOL !

When I bought mine (03 Red 172) I looked at:-
2 Silver
3 Black
0 Blue
1 Red
1 Cup

Imports tend to black or silver coz they are the most popular colours that people buy etc. This in turns helps the Reds/Blues to be rarer cars.

I think it does mean to a certain extent that they are more sort after cars by people that want to be different.

The red ones dont look as sporty as the silver ones almost anonymous in fact.....when I went for my mk1 I had the choice of the Reno demonstrator car which was a red one but decided I would plump for a silver one..... glad I did.........spoke to the bloke who bought it, turns out hed paid £700 more than me for it [ mine was brand new ] and had nothing but problems with it......lucky escape me thinks!!

my dads mk2 172 is red, and there are 3 other red ones (mk2s) around my way (romford,essex)

i told my dad, and he goes ive never seen another red one !!)

i reckon he needs to open his eyes a bit more !!
