just had the worst night ever.

Tonight went from bad to worse.

Dropped the wife off at a works do and on the way home whilst driving round a bit of a blind bend, i spotted something in the road.

Slowed down as much as possible but couldnt avoid it. turns out to be a catalytic converter that had fallen off something (aa man said a Ford).

Flaming thing has got straight through the sump. Left a trail of oil down the road and quite possibly shafted my engine.

Gets home to find out that the insurance run out 2weeks ago and the wife had told them not to renew it.

Worst thing is the catalytic converter was on its end and had obviously been put there by some little scrote.

I am hoping that the only damage is to the sump cos ive got to pay for it myself now!!!!!

How long was it run for after hitting the cat? Best bet is to get it on the ramps, get whats left of the sump off then have a look to see if anythings got inside, you might be lucky.

not long...i had my foot on the clutch so it was only idling aswell. i switched off a couple of seconds after hitting it

that sux mate!

sounds like you were quick in turning it off so i doubt there would be much if any internal damage.

Good luck

P.S I wouldnt want to be your misses when she gets back!

Should be ok a couple of seconds after but you wouldnt want to go much more than that.

I had exactly the same thing one night, using my mums mk4 golf, and some little f***er has decided to put a big chunck of brick in the road, couldnt avoid it, and ended up putting a hole in the sump big enough to fit your hand through, dumping all the oil up the road in a few seconds! It was 1.30am and all I wanted to do was get home and get to sleep!! So I know exactly how you feel!

It was lucky the kids that had put it there werent still about, I probably would have killed them!

yep, have run over one of the square-poled wooden signs you get in the countryside that some tw*t had put in the road for a laugh no doubt.

As above, I found it hilaaarious.

not.

sh*t Man - Unlucky.

BUT your lucky you didnt crash into anyone or run any one over if you didnt have insurance - Welll dodgy

Just been to the garage who have looked at it. Luckily its just the sump.

Gonna cost me just short of 700quid including the 36k service which is 220quid.

Got onto the phone to the insurance this morning. We hadnt cancelled the policy( they dug out the tapes of the telephone calls.) but they hadnt sent a renewal form to sign. They have covered us and backdated it so we do have insurance.

Thing is we have a 300 excess and we can only claim for the repairs to the sump (about 480) so is it really worth it.

IT JUST GOT WORSE.!.!.!

The immobiliser has just packed in on my valver. thats another 20quid to have it disabled, and 80quid for a replacemnt.

AARGHHH!!! Im off to bed, out of harms way. They havent predicted thunder & lightning tonight have they?

Thats bad news, could of been worse though. You could of had an accident involving someone else and no insurance.
Turns out it was there mistake, we were insured.

In the earlier post when i said the wife had told them not to renew it, that was what the insurance company had said. When i told the missus she went mental cos she said she hadnt told them anything. When they listened back to the phone calls (lucky they record them) they confirmed that we hadnt cancelled it.

Its normally a pain in the arse if you dont want to renew your insurance. They want to see a copy of your certificate from the new insurers.

personally id pay for it myself & leave the insurance company out of it.

unlucky though mate,
little scrotes (itf it was them who left it there want shooting)

Yeah for the little bit more it costs I would save loosing any no claims and pay for it yourself!

I was doing 85mph in the outside lane of the M1 the other day when they guy in fronts exhaust decided to fall off. Luckily I was a good distance away and managed to steer into the middle lane out of its way. Also there was nothing behind me but hitting that at 80mph wouldnt have been nice!

Anyway its blathered in oil from the aforementioned incident! Any tips on cleaning it, will hot soapy water do it?
