keeps coming slack

  Ph1
Think this is in the correct section?

Is it common for a Clio Sports handbrake cables to need replacing??

tightened mine up about 5 times over a year period and after a few days gradually works its way slack again (lever has to be pulled up very high) even though i tighten it up and have replaced the central adjuster with a new locking nut and added a second nut ! :S

Is it new cable time ?

Mine has had its handbrake cable at some point in its life so maybe they're just a bit naff and need doing every now and again ?

They should tighten automatically, on some kind of rachet to take up the slack now and again. Have you checked your rear pads also. :)

Theres not a rachet. There is an adjuster nut under the heatsheild. Its also had new pads etc.

Ive done exactly the same as Andyman added a second nut etc.

did you change the pads immediately before doing the cables?

you need to pump the footbrake to bring the h/brake auto adjustment ratchet into play in the calipers - then adjust cables

some assumptions in there, but could be the prob?
doesn't explain why they keep going slack though - may be replace cables incase there's some weirdness going on with the inner cable within the outer sleeve

That could be the problem. I never knew there was a ratchet in the caliper. Is that even the case now that the pads arn't new?

you should only ever need to do it if you've wound the pistons in to replace the pads - should look after itself automatically once the pads are in and the pedal's been used

I did do that when I replaced the pads so it must be something to do with the cable
