Knock knock

  Passat
Getting a knock from the drivers side front wheel every time I go over a bump. Checked engine mount - that seems fine. No leak from the Sachs. Spring looks ok from what I can see. Anyone any ideas. Only happens when that wheel goes over a bump.

A bump as in speed bump, or just bumps in the road? If the latter, mine is doing this but from the N/S.

Just a bump in the road. Manhole cover - anything like that. Yeah checked top mounts mate. They're solid so I don't know what could go wrong there. Top engine mount is fine too.

What do you think yours is Jesus?

No idea! Everything is newish or has been replaced suspension-wise. It sounds as though it's coming from the top mount, but underneath like on the strut.

Could be a ball joint. I had a knocking when turning. After closer inspection the ball joint had completely had it.

This happens in a straight line, but I guess that's worth checking out. Fancy a nosey, Jesus? You're only round the corner.

Had it on the misses car about a year ago, jacked it up and went over everything just to make sure nothing was loose.
the pinch bolt where the lower arm ball joint goes in to the hub wasn't quite tight, as I tried to tighten it I realised it wouldn't actually tighten up, as tho the thread was pooped.
new nut and bolt ordered, fitted two days later and the noise magically disappeared from that moment.

its worth going over everything to check all nuts and bolts are tight.

Been to RS Tuning today. They've had it up in the air. Absolutely no play in the wheels, joints or anything. They reckon its my solid top mounts making the noise. So it's a case of live with it or change them for standard or otherwise. Gonna stick with it for now. Moneys tight and as long as I know it's not doing any damage then there's not much to worry about.
