Knocking at low speeds, top mount problem?

Currently i get a knocking sound now and again when going at slow speeds and then putting my foot on the accelerator. I don't notice it at high speeds. Checked over the car, it's not the CV joint and the car is silent when on full lock and driving. Anti-roll bar links are fine. All the other joints are fine which leaves us to the top mounts.. There is quite a big gap between the car and the rubber part compared to the right hand side. The drivers side seems to have play when we push from underneath where as the passenger side is solid. It seems whatever is underneath the top mount on the underside (rubber?) has worn and hitting the car metal above when moving. The rubber at the top is fine and soft all round.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just found this picture from another thread. The rubber part to the right of the red arrow is what i imagine has worn away and is knocking against the metal work?
Is that a part that would stay on if i was to replace the shocks/springs with coilovers as that is my next plan.
