Knocking noise..

When the engine is running but the car isnt moving .. is this normal :S

I would say not normal Maz, have you done the under bonnet checks for loose covers, pipes & fixings etc ?

Exhaust mounts maybe?

Hard to say without hearing it I guess.

Havnt checked anything to be honest, I have only noticed it a couple of times recently when I havnt had the stereo on and wondered if its the noise the engine normaly makes when not moving..

Shouldn't really 'knock' as such Maz...only noticed recently? Is it more a tap or a deep knock and can you tell if it's coming from the head or the bottom end?

As said, get under the bonnet/car and have a good look around. Amazing how dramatic a car can make a noise with one little thing not in the correct place or not done up properly!

They do tap a little from top end I believe, but i wouldnt say knocking tho.

Guess if you are worried might be worth getting it checked out eh ?

It is more of a tap/rattle than a knock .. its hard to explain a noise in words, sorry ..

I know what you mean..not easy! Seriously, have a poke around and check everything seems to be where it should be and that there is nothing loose.

Also, silly question....but oil level ok?

Havnt checked the oil but I would presume a warning light would come on if it was low ?

I have noticed the noise when I have had the bonnet open before tbh so I was hoping that someone might confirm it was normal ..

Sorry for the stupid questions. !arning lights...eh....?!After having the Valver I went and bought a Fiesta Turbo, I don't know of any such luxury!

Might be worth checking your oil if no one comes back soon-ish Maz, you never know.

damage could already be done if the oil light comes on...... i wouldnt wait for the light personally......... Mine had a taping that speeded up with revs.... could be heard at idle and slow town cruising speed. It was the carbon cannistor. £44 new

Seriously its too low if the light comes on.... If you check the handbook it says it should be checked weekly. Another quick test to do.... when you start up the car, when it says 'oil ok' press the end of the wiper stalk (or is it the stalk off the clocks?!) It then has 5 dots...... the (o) should at least read 4 ish (clarify with edde, i cant remember how to do it!)

i never do, apparently in the CTR handbook it says to check @ every fill up

Not 100% sure but i know they get full of water and start to make a tappety noise

It absorbs fuel vapours, or collects them and vents them to the inlet iirc. Its all to do with emmisions etc.

If it's any help Maz, I noticed this on mine the other day (54 reg) and also have plenty of oil and nothing obvious falling off - just a knocking/ticking noise when idling in traffic...

Will have to take a look at this carbon canister thingy then...
