Knocking While Breaking

  Iceberg Ph1
Hi there.. I'm new to this website, was introduced by a mate and thought I would give it a look.. My names Darren, thought I would introduce myself as I can see me hanging about on here a lot! recently got hold of a Ph1 172 a few days back and boy what a hell of a lot of fun it is! Had a few MINOR issue like the usual airbag light which took all of a few mins to solve, but now I am hearing a rather faint knocking from the rear offside (I believe) whilst breaking and coming to a stop, this only happens probably when going from 10mph to a stop, I can't feel nothing pulling on the breaks etc.. Any ideas? I have searched and found pages apon apges of knocking problems, but nothing around my situation.. Anyhelp for a noob would be great!

Cheers

Exhaust not secured properly? Mine did that when the mount had perished (although the backbox is on the n/s)

Jack up the car (back first then do the fronts) and try and wiggle the wheels with the handbrake off. if you can get movement out of them then your in need of new wheel bearings. A guy on here had a rear wheel come off at 80mph on the M1 due to a bearing he left too long.

Have you checked the obvious like front ball joints? Caliper bolts? Shock bolts?

I had a similar thing and it was one of the suspension strut bolts that connects to the hub was a little loose. Worth just checking all the bolts are nice and tight.

Edit:Just read 'rear offside' but just check all the bolts.

Cheers guys I will do this later when I get in from work.. if it was say the bearing is that a DIY jobby or something for a mechanic? All the other suggestions of bolts etc should be pretty simple I guess as tightening them up. Thanks again

Sorry for multi posting.. (Not sure how to edit a post?) I just check everything that was suggested.. I was advised it maybe the ABS sensor ring, does that sound feasible? Any help would be great.. Thanks guys :D

if the sensor has moved/bent or the ring has moved then the sensor could be clashing with the ring. It's a slight possibility but not a common one.

Wheel bearings are something you can do at home, but it often requires you going to a garage with your new bearing and your hub to have the old bearing pressed out and the new bearing pressed in.

Shall have to keep an eye/ear out on this.. as I looked all over the car at all four corners and underneath and nothing is visibly loose or knocking against one an other, Going to be taking it to Ren-o-tec in a few weeks for a full out service so hopefully it uncovers what I am missing.. but thanks for the suggestions none the less :approve:

While I am here.. Any advice on cleaning an engine?.. Mine is filthy, old rotted leaves and overspilled oil (yeah its deffo overspill and not a leak lol) all on the top and under the cover, previous owner had a new Evo so it obviously lacked attention over the past few months parked under a tree! Cheers fellas

i got the same problem! a faint thumping/knocking noise. if u find out what it is, can you let me know. It could be my exhaust as it does fit lower than it used to. but how can you tell?

  Iceberg Ph1
Yeah its a right pain, but still not found a solution as of yet.. I don't think its my exhaust anyways because mine solid, tried shacking it to hell and it didnt hardly budge.. Still think mine is isolated around the breaking area of the cars rear.. I will have to get it checked out asap cos its annoying!

yeh its driving me insane. the only cure ive sound is turning the music up so i dont hear it. i honestly dont think its my exhaust as i think its the braking aswell. could be the pedal or discs or summat. doesnt happen every time aswell.

  Iceberg Ph1
Just a little update on mine.. I seem to find also that it only happens after about 10 - 15mins worth of driving.. Could be the bearing when its warming up prehaps? No idea.. Its getting me paranoid haha

hmmmm no matter what it is, it dont sound healthy and i keep thinkning driving down the road that my wheels gonna fall off or summat lol

I had an issue with the ABS sensor ring. It was cracked, causing the ABS to engage unnecessarily. Every now and then I'd hear a sort of grinding/knocking noise and feel a pulsing sensation when braking. If you're getting those symptoms then it could be the ABS ring. Didn't cause a problem, was just annoying.

Mine's done this recently too but fixed itself lol

Haha.. Thats lucky for some.. Mine is a serious pain in my neck!

Yeah I was told that it could maybe be the ABS sensor ring, but whilst braking I do not get the vibration though the peddle so I think I ruled that out along with anything like discs or pads due to there is no feedback via the peddle itself.. I'm guess is now around the bearing.. Taking to a Renault specialist on Monday for a full wack service and a good once over on top to find this mysterious noise!

hmmm mine could be the abs sensor ring then. will have to check tho when i get the wheels off. ive recently had them replaced, maybe not fitted properly???lol.

Had a very similar problem, changed the rear brake discs, which includes abs ring and bearings if you buy them already fitted (much easier) and the problem stopped

mine have recently been changed with the abs sensor already built in. but its doing it now. probably needs looking at

Just a little update for anyone who is suffering this.. Mine was my rear dampers, had both changed and it has stopped completely. Hope this helps!
