Need a cheap one for work with the 9 pin plug. My laptop doesn't have one, and what we connect to (fire/intruder alarms) don't like the converters you can get. Anybody know where do get any refurbed units from? or any other way of converting mine?

I have been using a USB converter for years and continue to do so. I've read all sorts of horror stories about them not working but TBH I put it down to user error and/or poor drivers. I've never had any issues with all sorts of proprietary equipment. The external equipment should have no clue that a converter is being used. Screw buying a laptop with serial these days. It'll be a POS.

Other than that account of my experiences, I can't help.
