Launching on the 1/4 mile

  Fiat Coupe 20v turbo

I did my first 1/4 miling on Monday and was wondering what technique people use to get a good 60ft time? I was usually sitting at 2.5/3k close to the biting point and letting the clutch out slow until I got moving then nailing it. My times were 60fts werent too bad, usually around high 2.3s with 2.341 my best and a 2.643 when I hit the limiter in 1st after a higher rev start. Tips anyone?

Oh and anyone know the best 60 ft by a clio on here?

1.9 is very impressive, damn those 4wd cars though I saw the CRD Impreza do 1.6 60ft!

Used to get 2.2s in the Cup, but was getting an average of 2.4 in the CTR on Monday, so need to work on my starts...

The problem is that the best launch method is not the same for all cars, so you need to work out whats best for you!

Too little revs and you will bog slightly, too much revs and it will spin the wheels, so its a matter of experiementing.

For example in my 306 Rallye I was launching at about 4,500rpm and slipping the clutch slightly, but in the Cup I found that a low rev launch of 2000-2500rpm was better as it didnt spin the wheels. The CTR is a tricky one as you need to get it into VTEC as quick as possinble, but it doesnt engage until 6000rpm so you need a high rev start, but it spins the wheels very easily.

Seems launching the Type-R isnt easy, there was one at Elvington.

Best time 15.50@86mph

 that time is bad enough for a CTR... but the terminal is shocking!! Either a poorly CTR or a crap pilot!!

Maybe both, if you spin up or bog down at the start I suppose it cuts your terminal down a fair bit as well though.

I was at the Jap Fest at Santa Pod a couple weeks ago and saw quite a few CTRs do around 14.5 seconds. One even got down to the high 13 second mark! Also a AMG Merc SL600 and an Ariel Atom gate crashed the party. The Arial Atom got down to 12.2 secs before its drive shaft went, but the AMG was doing under 12 secs! I was supprised how quick the CTRs were and most were getting low 15s to high 14s consistantly.

15.3 for the one at crail on sunday. when his bird drove it, it looked like she was changing gear at 4k lol. I think the times for her was 16+

I launch the Cup at just under 3k, but when I drive the ITR its more like 5k. It just shows how launches differ from car to car.
