lcd vs plasma... whats the best...

Plasmas need re ejecting with plasma after a certain amount of hours in use.
As your looking for a 42" unit I would go for a plasma.
LCD are perfect for small screens up to 37"ish and plasmas work better when 40" and bigger. Also I'm yet to view a LCD were fast action images don't blur slightly due to the refresh rate.
To be totally future proof get a set which can display 1080p native as most can't or are just 1080p compatible (which is not the same).
HDMI inputs are a must, the more the better unless you plan to do all your video and audio switching via an av receiver.

But if you want the best quality you need to go back and use old proven technology - CRT.
Just because the main stream manufacturers are pushing a certain technology ie LCD doesn't mean that it is the best.

Sound posts from 7MAT and indeed look at avforums, i went for a LCD in the end (Philips 9830) due to what i wanted it for.
On pure picture quality the Pioneer 43in XDE is the screen to have, but the philips lcd is close.
Life of Plasma and LCD are similar, both can suffer screen retention but not as bad as the scare stories.
OLED will replace both tho

They both have pro's and con's.
We have a plasma 42" and an LCD 40", LCD seem to produce much better brighter colours but Plasma produces far better "blacks", if you watch a lot of "Dark" programs, Sc-Fi and the like get a plasma

Each have there strengths and weaknesses. I went from a LG Plasma to a Hitachi LCD, mainly because I have a HD Projector now as well.
IMO the Panasonic and Pioneer Plasma that are raved about are awesome. Pictures with HD on them is stunning.
But I had Sky HD installed last week and the picture on the Hitachi 32" LCD is stunning as it is with my projector. A lot of it is down to source. Looking forward to picking up a HD DVD player in the states next month
