LCD are perfect for small screens up to 37"ish and plasmas work better when 40" and bigger. Also I'm yet to view a LCD were fast action images don't blur slightly due to the refresh rate.
To be totally future proof get a set which can display 1080p native as most can't or are just 1080p compatible (which is not the same).
HDMI inputs are a must, the more the better unless you plan to do all your video and audio switching via an av receiver.
