What is the best way to fix this?

What is the best way to make the airbag cover look new again? Has anyone tried the heat gun method, and if so how did it work?

Heat gun method?
I seen videos of people warming up plastic with a heat gun so that it kind of refreshes the surface. You may have seen a video where someone uses a gas torch on seats at a football stadium. It’s the same kind of process, but I just wonder if the material on the steering wheel responds to it in a positive way.

Do you want an airbag to the face?

I can see it causing more damage than good. By all means try it but prepare to factor in a replacement.
