Leaving Car for 5 months

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend is going away for 5months :-( she will be leaving her clio 1.2 04 plate in the drive. No one else is insured to drive it. Is there anything I can do to make sure the car still works ok when she gets back?

i.e. is starting it up moving it forward then back it the drive once a week enough to keep it working correctly?

DO NOT leave the handbrake on! Itll seize up, run it and move it at least once a week. Is it not possible to add someone as a named driver whilst shes away?

Reverse her car into the drive so that you can fit jumpleads from your car to hers. Makes life a lot easier!

Her parents live in london we are in Scotland and it would cost about £300 to add me to her insurance as I am male 22 with 1 accident in the last 3 years :-( so not worth it especialy as I would only be driving it round the block once a week.

I take it she is leaving it fully insured... have you got third party insurance on other vehicles? (odd to find people with it under 25 years old but it does happen on some policies) - you could then drive it on that...

Nope no 3rd party on either insurance both under 25 the flat I live in has a carpark on private land which I could drive it around wont give it much of a run but better than nothing.

Make sure it has a good oil change with all the trimmings when it gets used again.

Its only done 2000miles so in theory it should be fine!!!! i hope

Modern petrols tend to go off. Ive experienced this with motorcycles that have been stood for a couple of years. The petrol in the tank was about as much use as water and you should see the mess left where the fuel evaporated. Took me ages to clean the carbs. Wouldnt want that in my injection system...


Strongly recommend that you keep using the car.

So would switching it on for say 20 mins each week and driving it around the car park a bit do the trick?

YEah get it up to normal operating tempertures at least once a week and give it a wee run.

itd be better than nothing, best thing would be to get it up to temp, drive it for a few miles esp if you could do 70 in it for 5-10 miles etc give it a good blast.

Turn it over once a week, get it to operating temperature, and if anyone can, take it out for about 15 minutes. You could disconnect the battery so your alarm doesnt drain your battery too.

tis true its reckoned they lose an octane a month
