Ledas, overkill for my needs?

polybushes are horrid.........stay OE or go all the way.

And does the diesel have electric rack or anything, as my valver has wonderful steering feel even with PAS.

edde, have you thought about changing the bushes to the poly ones, or if you wanted ultimate feel then would full on rose-jointing or whatever it's called not be beneficial?

Basically taking all the 'slack' out the system?

Or you could upgrade the whole setup to a 172 Cup version?

I don't know how your escort drove (I'm guessing mk1 or mk2?) but I don't think any modern car is going to come close to the feel of older good cars!
Mk4 Escort (no classic) nothing sporty about it just could feel everything happeneing at the wheels chnaged a tyfor a cheap replacemtn and could instantly tell which tyre it was that it was low on pressure and how far it could take it. CLio almost devoil of any feeling.

Not going to polybuhses there all rubish I'm going to chnage all the ARB and wishbone bsuhes next time the ball joints need doing (about 100k) but even new ones with zeros miles fell just the same so its not realy worn bushes giving the feeling.

No point in suepsnion change i could chnage the hubs to 172/182 ones and the shocks to Leda etc but there no realy point if I'm not gainign anything which I want especialy for the money it would cost. 172 stuff ins't much different just stronger bearing to deal with the extra camber and slitly wider track. Plus to be easy I'd have to change the brakes for the 172/182 ones which I don't need or what to have to bother with as the stock and Ds2500 pads are much cheaper for my presenet setup (£17 and £60 respecfully vs £40 and £85 for 172/182 setup stuff)

Electric rack. Its got the 60amp setup which is the most powerful one the 1.2 use the 45amp stuff.

I liked my old WIlliams feel but it still wasn't the same as the Escort couldn't feel as connected the Williams was much bettter though.

Could you swap to a non-PAS quick rack?

I agree with Ben about the valvers - mine feels great with a Willy setup :)

Possible got to see if the none rack fits but then the the trouble of making it fit plus got to ligthen the front end realy to make it work as I'm a wimp.

Plus I'd have to tell insurance and err there stupid enough as is.

If I was going to this much trouble I'd go a whole job chnage the engine to a 1.9 last generation preferably a VAG one with a better box and that a lot of work.

whats this obcession with the vag lump?
its s**t!

Any turbo you can boost on stock parts to 400bhp, hell the 2jz can take 1000bhp on a stock bottom end.

I'm not a petrol head. VAG 1.9 TDI would be my choice.

Can get injectors for it cheap the gearbox is decinet plus it can run on cheap oil plus its cheaper to fix than modern high pressure diesel no need to throw away all the pipes when you chnage an injector.

Ben I know that your expertiese lies with Renault and Honda engine but could you port a cylinder head for a diesel much the same same theoretical ideas isn't it? I'm not sure who specilaises in diesel head work etc most would just wack the boost up and accept the stock head casting is there much to be gained from an 8V diesel head or do you need to keep more meat in the head for strenght?

you can do alot with diesel heads, the only major diff is that the valve seat and precombustion configurations.

Well, somebody really doesnt like us, do they !!

We are a fairly small company, but we have been going for over 30 years, and that doesn't happen through sheer luck. Our performance can be measured in many ways, including hundreds of motorsport competition results, and due to the fact that many of our customers have come back to us time and time again over the years - they have a choice, but they do come back.

I am very proud of what we do at Leda, if you don't like us, fine. You too have a choice, but I can do without the slagging off thanks.

Kind regards

I like Leda. Treated me properly when I went to have mine tweaked. Tea was nice, and they guys took time to explain things.

Thank you again.

To be honest Dan, if a part makes you smile and want to drive your car, be that due to its evocative name, or how it makes the car handle, its worth the money.

You wont go wrong with either h&r's or leda's, and will notice a huge difference on both track days and the road. Do it!

I just basically wouldn't take anyones advice on here. With due respect, there are literally about three people out of the hundreds of members who know what they are talking about.

Ask about car setup on here and you get no replies, talk about beating Scoobies and a tarmac scrapping stance and you get 5 pages...

How you like a car to handle is individual preference, if you don't know what you want then you haven't reached your own or your car's abilities.

I have them on my 182.

They made my car feel much more like the old pugs (205gti and 306xsi) I used to own (I always felt the 182 had too much roll and 'squirmed' to much under hard braking for me).

They impove handling and looks and IMO being able to tweak the damping and feel how the car reacts is pretty  and gives you an insight in to how a car handles and what you prefer.

If you have the cash to buy and get them setup properly definately get a set.

I use mine to commute everyday and have done around 12k miles with no problems.

ahh bargins keep floating by, new h&r are the way forward

i know where your coming from mate, from the replies i get i can tell who knows what they are talking about.

like markM say i feel there is too much roll. more than my 106 rallye had with standard setup. that was a flyer round cadwell and i want the cup to be the next step up.

or else it time for a cheap xsi wth gti engine eased in!!!

I might get slated for this but have you thought of just trying Eibach sportline springs. I'm an ex Pug 205 1.9GTI / 306XSI owner and the Eibachs put the smile back on my face when fitted to my 182. So much more sure footed, like driving one of the classic Pugs again. Why waste £750 on coilovers unless you are really into track days etc, when £130 gives you ~80%of the benefit?

  R27 - 77/500
yes that was an option as well but i would like a bit more of a drop than u get with eibachs, i realise handling isnt all about being low but for the drop and gain in handling then coilovers are better?

The sportlines give a descent drop mate. I looked at photos on here before I got mine and thought the drop wasn't enough after having seen 182's on Apex -40mm which was the 'lowness' I wanted. I was very happy with the height on sportlines. I took some measurements of my full fat + cup pack before fitting them, not done the after measurement yet but the drop is significant front and rear (i'd guess at ~35mm). Best £130 i've ever spent on a car, looks the bollox and like having the 205 back handling wise! No one complains about eibach ride quality on here either. You see a few moans about 'lowness' but honestly, the drop looks well.

  Tangoed Works
Think that I will go eibach pro when the time comes, as never done a track day, and will prob only ever do 1 / 2 in the car. I like the sound of them making the car more stable under braking and giving more sure footedness.

Not really bothered about drop as car looks low enough as standard and never scrapes bumps.

The real problem is subjective and ill informed opinions.

They arent made out of the best materials, they dont emply tig welds, and other show factors, simply because they dont have to.

Not a case of disliking you at all. You have competition as most companies and each have merits and disadvantages.

If you want constructive critism to further your product this post should be useful, as per BenR's quote (a fan of your product no less). If you feel you are good enough then fair play.

From other peoples experience, i know they wont risk there precieved increased chance of failure using your shocks. They have a tight budget but must use more expensive products as failure at an event they have prepped and trailered a car to would cost more than the price difference.
Motorsport use and image will reflect onto road users, be that right or wrong.

Much less roll. Will measure in morning if its not pissing down and let you know.

Just measured drop of 182 on sportlines. It's 25mm (1") all round.
It looks more to me but thats the actual drop and looks well.
My advise is go for sportlines, or if you must have a bigger drop H&R coilovers. Steer clear of apex.

the difference with adjustable coil overs is you can set lower stiffer settings for trackdays.plus you can balance up corner weights better for a better balance. i run ledas and would not buy anything else. yes maybe proflex etc are better over a certain narrow area but there over kill for a road/track car.

wouldnt worry Bev, Fred doesnt know his arse from his left ear lobe. ;)

PMSL, I wish I'd have read this thread before yesterday. He'd have got an earfull at Autosport.

Bev, have to say your coilovers for the 182 have been the best modification I've made to the car. It has totally transformed the handling, and the level of adjustability of the dampers works perfectly for both road use and track use.

Some pics of them being but to good use at Brands in November. Thanks Lee M for these.
