Letting it warm up

  Valver

I never realised it made a difference revving it in when it was cold, but after reading a lot of comments on here about it, its not a good idea?

My mates rant their cars when cold. They come out of the pub and start revving their cars up in the car park to impress bystanders. Then they go straight out onto the ring road and start screwing it.

Thick as s**t. I got fed up of warning them so I just laugh now.

Never boot it until the oil has had time to warm up. The Mk1 16V and Williams had an oil temperature gauge that was really useful (the oil temp on them old F7 blocks took ages to warm up).

On a car without an oil temperature gauge, I wait until the coolant is at normal operating temperature before gently opening the engine up. Booting the car before will lead to premature engine wear, although oils are a lot better than they used to be.

Equally, letting the engine idle for too long can lead to carbon deposits over time. This is why some gently driven town cars benefit from a good thrash to make them quicker!

Nearly every morning I get tail gated by this fog lighted Zetec-S. Ive toasted him a couple of times with the car cold but usually let him overtake on the d/c.

He drives fast every day whereas I cruise. Hell come a cropper I tell ye..

Just out of interest how long does the oil take to warm up fully?

My commute is a journey of 8 miles and I never rant it because I figure the car aint warmed up properly until I get near home. So I go out on a weekend and go for a 10 mile cruise and then start winding her up.

It makes the weekend more worth while tho...

i was pissing myself at the boys at the north west meet, straight out the pub after our lunch, limiter up the road, smoke beltching out the exhaust, poor 172s!! there was me taking it easy in the wee 1.2!!

Respect boys, respect ;)

Engine oil takes much longer than the water to reach full temp. Ive revved my 182 some time after the water temp was OK, and the rev limiter seemed to cut in early. A bit later I had full revs. Maybe this is Renaults way of protecting the engine.

Yep, its annoying sometimes when you think youve given it enough time and it still cuts in.

yeah during the week i dont go above 3k revvs (as its only 5 miles to work) then weekend give it a good rant to get the old oil moving

an even better reason to be happier on friday.....

i used to let mine warm up before giving it a good thrash, but now i want the engine to go bang, im just giving it full whack all the time, as my journey to work is only about 4 minutes, 2 minutes of that is sitting at traffic light time.

Once the engine goes bang, gives me an excuse to get the engine conversion done lol

The gauge on the dash measures water temp, useless really.. Oil takes about 10 miles to be properly warm, 15miles on a really cold day. 80 degrees C is what you want.

Thanks MarkRS. Ive always waited for the gauge to reach normal level before flooring it. This usually take 5 minutes / 5 miles so I guess Ive been flooring it too early.
