Unless your competent and got a lot of patience I wouldn't try it to be honest - on axle stands in the garage, or on the drive that is. You'll need a few mates when your ready to lift it out aswell. They're tight alright, but its possible. Box out the top.

Can't really set it up wrong as such Harry, you'll get a clutch alignment tool with the clutch ('real' mechanics don't use one but its so much easier and saves messing about)

As long as you are fairly handy with a spanner its not too bad. Just take your time to it and you'll be fine. Also, I would think you wouldn't have to completely remove the box from the engine bay to do the clutch - though I haven't worked on a 172 so can't say for sure. If you do have to remove the box though you don't need anyone else for getting it out - its not that heavy.

In terms of actually fitting the clutch it isn't too difficult just make sure its aligned properly and that you torque everything up correctly.
