should try and disconnect it on the bolt that connects it to the gearbox, not the adjustable bit a bit further along the linkage

easiest solution would be to get another linkage... afaik all mk1 clios should fit?

stick it in 3rd gear, get under the car undo the linkage
get your helper to put the gearstick where he thinks 3rd should be
do it up

if you are really clever you can figure it out by the movement of the linkage from under the car.. something you pick up when you have a boss breathing down your neck asking if its done yet

tried that, but couldn't get reverse afterwards, so moved a little over and then couldn't get 5th, remember I said my helper was retarded lol
