load average on linux

  Polo + Micra
now i noticed that my cpu seems to be running quite hot(well the fan is spinning fast and there is a lot of hot air coming out the side of the case)

now i just checked my load average an it seems to be floating around 4.xx

now i'm sure this used to be about 1.xx at the most.

i was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on it?

the only program i got running is amsn.

Load average is based on how many processes are in the run queue at the time (I think) and will depend on how quickly they are dealt with by your cpu (I think).

I wouldn't be too worried about load average, on your CPU tab in System Monitor just look at the CPU column and Memory column, if they look ok then nothing to worry about.
