Its been hacked and his entire friendslist has been sent a link to some website? (Probs virus etc). The password on his XBL has been changed too!

This a common thing at all?

Reset password on the email address to the alternative email and sign into live quick, then change email/password/gamertag.

Common even back in 2007.
