Loose steering wheel!

I've just recently bought a mk1 172. Its very high mileage, but overall am pleased with the car considering what i paid.

However, i have just noticed some play in the steering wheel. Its a bit hard to describe really, but you can move the actual steering wheel itself up and down, and left to right.

I've checked that the steering column adjustment lever is up correctly, as at first thought that could've come lose, but thats ok. Its just strange as its just the actual wheel that moves, none of the surronding plastics or anything!

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

No one have any ideas? When you remove the airbag, how is the wheel held on? Is there a rubber bush or anything that could have worn?

Sounds like the bolt that holds it to the column has somehow come loose then.

Remove the airbag and tighten it...torx bolt IIRC.
