Loud clunking noise from steering.

Hi peeps,

Just recently ive noticed, when my car is cold, if I move the steering wheel left and right on the spot I get a really loud clicking/clunking noise.

Once ive driven the car for a while and I stop again, it doesnt do it.

Its really quite loud and am worried as to what it could be...

Any ideas ???

Mine made a similar noise when it had a loose steering rack bolt and a knackered bush

Ive been doing some reading on different threads and I think it might be the steering rack bushes. Ive also got a bit of play in my inner TR's so they are being replaced soon.

The noise just worried me as it is quite loud tbh. Like a cracking noise...

mine did go away after changing the rack bushes and torquing all the bolts up!

Its a bit fiddly, theres a guide on here somewhere, makes it alot easier!

Ok sweet. Where did you buy the bushes for the rack from ?

I ordered mine from Wests Renault irrc

On the subject - does anyone know the correct torque settings for the rack bolts, TRE's and the wishbones?

rack mounts are 50nm
track rod ends are 37nm
dont have a listing for the wishbones would recommend doing up tight when the wheels are on the floor and the cars weights on the suspension so the bushes are in a more natural position with less load on them.

also check your strut top mount bearings as when they siesze/breakup you turn it on the lock it loads up the coil then the load on the spring force them round making a load noise from the spring when they do it.
