Lowering. Do u need shocks too

  Mk2 Ph1, 1.6 16v Clio

Hi,

Ive just put 17" wheels on my 99 Mk2 Phase1, 1.6 16v Clio and now I want to lower it. Some people say just springs are fine, others say get a full kit as the standard shocks will go very quick with just lower springs.

Can someone tell me the definitive answer please? I really wanna finish my car off soon by lowering it but dont wanna knacker anything else up in the process. Cost IS an issue obviously as im not exactly rolling in it but I wanna do it right.

This is how my car looks at present:

theres no real definitive answer imo!!
I have -60mm shocks on my 2002 1.2 16V dynamique and touch wood havent had any probs.

Some people have damaged items through only fitting springs, (not heard that myself on this forum tho) i know the majority of people on here just fit springs.

Dampers will give you a better improvement to ride and handling so im told, sure you will get some more answers to help you more!!

Go for it...-60mm!! all the way

If you get springs only youll probably shorten the life of your existing dampers, as the have to do the same amount of work but with shorter travel.

But do you care? Dampers are dead cheap, and you might not wear them out for ages anyway. Mine (on my 172) lasted over 30,000 miles (and for all I know theyre still going today).

If you want to improve the handling then youll want to get dampers that are matched to the new springs, or better still coilovers (springs and dampers in a single unit).

Id try springs on their own to begin with - thats what most people do. If you want something more sophisticated later on then fine - lowering springs are cheap and you can always sell them on.
