lowering help needed

I want to improve the handling of my 2000 plate clio i have been told that i dont have to replace the shockers if i only drop it by 35mil. PI do a spring kit which is a 35mil rear drop with a 40mil drop on the front will this be ok or is it better to replace the shocks aswell.I was also told by one place that i would have to have the tortion bar dropped is this right?.Any advice or experiance of just replacing the springs would be appriciated i dont want it to bottom out at every speed hump etc as i will be using the car for holidays etc all the luggage and things apart from the kitched sink you know what women are like lol.

Your car doesnt have a torsion bar if its a 2000 model - its springs all round. 35/40 sounds a bit less than usual but I shouldnt think youll have any trouble with rubbing. To find out more have a look at the excellent lowering guide on the home page.

id advice you just get 60mm, even without uprated shocks. Because in a few months you will be like me...well its low...but not low enough.

So like me you will end up paying for another set of springs.

Of hand...Anyone want a set of apex 40mm springs? been on the car about a month?

Haha, Im exactly the same... the 40mm drop just doesnt satisfy me enough when I look at the car, I mean sure it looks lower when you see it alongside a standard model but it isnt obviously low. But will 60mm look that much lower??? After all its only another 2cm!! I am gonna wait a few months and then get a set of Spax -60mm springs and shocks, heard too many stories about the quality of P-I and wheel bearing damage etc.

yeah ill prob get 60 once i get my 17s, will look like a monster truck.

i see a saxo the day on 15s lowered 60. looked stunning

I can send you all pictures of my clio when it was lowered 40mm and then 60mm (both pics are with the car on 17inch Superleggeras)

So do you think you wont get f**ked wheel bearing with spax -60mm springs???

Dawso if you want to keep reasonable comfort go with -40mm springs, the ride is harsh with -60mm springs. You wont have to worry about rubbing either as long as the wheel offset is right, mine is -60mm with 17s and it doesnt rub even with 4 up and a bootful of luggage

Ive seen that picture on the gallery and it looks sh*t but those pictures are great!

Where do you go to get tracking sorted..halfords or something?

Can you lower them 60mm with 17s??

tracking at halfords? lol...sorry dont mean to laugh:)

need to get it done at a garage.

I seen a clio on 17 fox wheels the day, had all its sideskirts, spoiler and front and back bumper strip painted silver...the car was blue...looked interesting..but wasnt too sure about the contrasting colours.

Just had my 2002 clio lowered 60mm springs all round, no tracking adjustment needed, its a llittle harsh on the ride but I have tried and cannot bottom it out for the life of me. May only be extra 2cm but makes one hell of a difference.

Good luck

i wonder how bad the ride is, lowering it 40 improved the handling and ride quality so much. maybe its just apex springs.dont know

I am not sure Ive had such a good experience with my apex springs, the handling isnt noticeably different, its just a little rougher. On the other hand I havent checked my tire pressures in about 7 months and I suspect the front offside is soft, so this may explain it!! I did think when I first had the springs fitted that the car handled better and cornered more stably.

Monk, I wasnt dissing your springs mate. I know that no one thats lowered their car 60mm on the PI springs on this site has had any complaints, and I am sure they are probably no more likely than Spax would be to cause wheel bearing damage, etc. All I was thinking was that if I went down the Spax route, I can get a set of springs with matched shocks (which I am not sure if PI do???), and this should avoid any possible problems with dropping 60mm on the standard shocks.

lol sorry mate, bit of misunderstanding by me, i thought what you meant is the make of the springs that causes the bearing damage, im not sure if the matched dampers would prevent wear on wheel bearing, cv joint etc though, as the car that low would put the driveshaft at a funny angle and increase stress on bearings etc...?

anyway please report back when you have the spax package, would like to hear the review of it and of course.....some pictures:)

as far as problems regarding lowering -60m with standard shocks, such as bouncy ride, springs dislocating while jacking the car up, worn shocks etc, havent come across any yet, the car has been jacked up number of times and the springs never dislocated, shocks still in good conditioned after 10000 miles with no leaking, the ride is a bit harsh at times though, you could try having the springs first and see if you are happy with it, if not then go for dampers as well

I hope you mean the pics, and not my car!!!!!! Those pics are (left) 60mm Pi springs but not bedded in taken about 10mins after id fitted them!!! (right) is 40mm Apex springs, but these were fully bedded in (taken 2months after id fitted them)

Rob, those wheels are 17inch, so yeah you can lower it 60mm with 17s!!!!!!!!!! (and have 5 people in the car with no rubbing)

Thanks Fred, i might go down the same route as yourself then. I did mean the pictures! The ones up the top are much bigger, your car looks mean!

Do PI and Apex make shocks to go with the springs? Has anyone got better bushes or anything else?

  Lionel Richie

Pi dont do shocks for the 60mm springs

Apex only do shocks for their 40mm springs (non adjustable)

Spax have just brought out 40-60mm coilovers for £549

Koni do adjustable shocks for £89 front and £75 rear (each + top adjustable) im planning on getting these

Let me know how good the konis are!

How much difference does suspension mods make to the car? I was thinking of doing the suspension but leaving the wheels for another year.

fecking hell

thats like £350 for shocks spose its not too bad

Direct line are charging me £49 EXTRA FOR LOWERING SPRINGS AND ALLOYS a rip off i think as the alloys are 15 inch renault ones off my extreme which the wife drives and the eibach springs are for fitting onto stock dampers. As i said to Direct line why if i had bought the car with alloys fitted as a standard the premium would have been the same ie before the £49 couldnt explain that one
