Lowering Mk2 172

Just really want to change the springs at the mo, whats the lowest I can go without casuing too much wear and tear but would still be noticabley low enough to get rid of the gaps between the wheels and the arches (I love my car but it looks like a jeep!)

Which are the best springs and where should I buy?

Was thinking about Eibach sportline, about a 50mm drop, should be fairly noticeable?

Depends on your future plans for wheels. If you want to get 17"s at some point dont go lower than 30mm or youll get problems with rubbing with the bigger wheels.

Mine has the Eibach Pro spring kit, which gives about 30mm. Got mine from http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/ but you can get them pretty much anywhere.

if you speak to k-tec they should be able to get hold of 60mm springs - not certain on this though)

Is 60mm not a bit too low on standard shocks though, dropped my punto 60mm on standards, was really low, but clunked a bit on full lock and one shock leaks a bit! Dont know how tough renault shocks are though?

Would 60mm be ok, planning on sticking with my 16s for now anyway, wont look so bad when it sits a bit lower!

60mm sounds a bit much to me, but hey, springs are cheap so give it a go!

60mm is far too low on a 172

dont forget its already been dropped 35mm when it leaves the factory

so dropping it 60mm is like dropping a non-172 clio 95mm!!

The biggest drop i know of for a 172 is 40mm Apex (other makes too) kis172 has them on her car, lowest 172 ive seen

Have a look at KTECs kits. I think they do a lowering kit (shocks and springs etc) for about £200. I would go no lower than a 30 mm drop. Its just enough to get rid of the gap of most cars and it wont f**k up your handling or create any extra (noticble) wear. I also think that cars that go too much over 40mm start looking silly. In fact I think some on 40mm look silly. Thats my opinion anyway.

Here here DTWD! There is such a thing as lowering a car -too- much! Everyone seems to want to lower their car to the max, so thats its about 3mm off the ground. Why? Well, I guess its inspired by Touring Cars and the like.....but then these are low for a reason - racing! They have rock hard springs and very firm damping, which they can get away with as they only ever drive on super-smooth race-track tarmac.

Lowering a road car to achieve the Touring Car "look" might look great, but it usually results in a very bumpy ride and -can- adversely affect the handling e.g. making the car less progressive on the limit which, in turn, can actually make it -more- dangerous!

If it is sitting in the floor how do you get the jack under it.

Some garages that specialize in car tuning have hydraulics lifts that are floor level so you could in effect lift the car up if it had no clearance at all.

But that would not help you if you are out on a drive and get a flat neither would the wood system unless you are carrying it in the boot.

Tyre-Weld isnt fool proof, will piss straight back through the tyre if the hole is too big! Happened to me once, bought two cans aswell and it aint cheap!

Although the PI springs say they lower it 25/15mm its not true. Simon has PI springs and koni shocks and it sits lower than Kathys on Apex springs and Koni shocks.

Carlouk my 172 has been dropped 40mm alround on apex springs and runnin 17s, and ive had the rear archs rolled but you dont need them rolling if ur keeping the standard 16s on.

That means you got rid of the rear liners right?

Nope the rear liners didnt need 2 come out as they dont go round the top of the inner arch they just go behind the shocker and drop down to the bumper. £20 a arch to be rolled
