Lowest Footprint Anti-Virus?

Ive been using McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for the past few years, its tiny and has hardly ever used any resources. Never had delays on startup for it to load, and never slowed the machine down...

Although, since they have released updates, it seems to have gone slower and slower. On startup it hogs 100% CPU and about 125k-140k of memory for the first few minutes. Ive tried re-installing, updating, the lot, nothing makes a difference.

I want to sack it off and use something different...what are the best ones out there these days?? (pref. Free, as I was using McAfee VS through a company licence) I dont want Norton/AVG or anything which a crappy heavy GUI, just the most lightweight application really!

Thanks if anyone has any suggestions...

I'd recommend avast, not sure on its system usage but i've never noticed a slowdown on mine whilst using it so it can't be much.

The most lighweight AV I have found was Linux ;) can't get much lighter than that :p

If you insist on sticking with windows though check out F-Secure CS 9.0 it went through a bloat stage as well but its now pretty lightweight and unobtrusive.

Lol. I usually use Mac, but I use Sony Vegas a lot so have a Windows machine for that etc. Il have a look into that!

8.5...Never had any issues in the past, but the recent lot of updates it seems to have got slower and slower

try 8.7 then

ms security essentials is using just 2.75mb of ram on my machine at the mo !!

McAfee is sat at 67k at the moment, thats been the norm recently!

Il give the MS one a go, fancy a change. Cheers.

I've been very happy with NIS 2010 in Windows 7. Compared to older versions, it's a featherweight!

When it's idling, Task Manager says it's using 7,800k memory.

£16 for a 2-user license on eBay.

I use ESET NOD32 antivirus, its currently using 47k mem usage and ive had no trouble so far. Used to have avg but much prefer NOD32.

Does Nod32 have a free version like AVG does? I can only see stuff for free trials.

I got rid of McAffee cause it was crap.

Use kaspersky now and use malware bytes every sunday on a full scan and then run advanced system care free to clear the crap and sort any issues.

Never had any issues since using them and they don't slow the system down very much.

i like the idea of this free AV having such a low load on resources, what are people doing for a firewall though ?

NOD32 might only take around 40mb to idle however that is purely for the anti virus part which is idling. If you have the spyware bit as well and it is actively running you are talking over 200mb on the memory foot print. Just NOD32 will say it is only using 40mb ish but that is just 1 part of the program.

Security essentials will do the same job using 60mb. As it is both anti spyware and anti virus. Also detects things norton doesn't. The spyware part of security essentials is brilliant as well. Not to mention 60mb for an actively running bit of software like this is tiny.

McAffee I know a lot of people use but again its 140+mb memory usage not doing too much.

Lot of people don't realise there are numerous services and processes for these anti virus programs and the memory footprint adds up quite a bit.

Security essentials right now is one of the smallest footprints in memory. While it does both anti virus and spyware/ ad ware. So well worth getting especially when it is free.

Well that lasted long - I ran Security Essentials upto now but im getting fed up of it firing svchost.exe upto 99 CPU usage every time the PC boots, I have to end the task then I loose network access/audio drivers until I restart the services. Its all the latest version, latest def's etc - just seems to be a waste of time now!

Any other recommendations?

Try out VSE 8.7 mate? With patch3 it runs fine unless your PC is proper dogs**t, I have 500 clients including old celeron tills running it without any major speed issues.

basically this. mine - sophos corporate for exa mple runs only 7mb in sophos related executables but 110mb in a saveserice.exe which has to be added to the figure.
