LSD options

  182 Trophy
I realise this has been done before, but my question is slightly different to the threads I've found.

I think for the money, I've pretty much nailed my options down to the Quaife and Gripper options.

My concern is that for slow and tight auto tests, there are reports of the gripper making steering a pain in slow stuff/off throttle.

Would it be ok set-up quite mild as for as ramp angles/lock? If so, how does it compare with the Quaiffe in this configuration?

Slow stuff you will be lifting/unloading wheels around cones and tight bends on the power and the wheels will spin with a Quaife, gripper will always lock.

Just copy what other competitors have done in their cars, I personally wouldn't fit anything other than a plated diff for competition.

I'd talk to Gripper they will recommend a ramp angle for your application as they do for us on Sprints, I've got their Tarmac ramp angles set on mine I'd just visit the site, the Quaife may not be best for your application as stated once you lift a wheel, I've not noticed any problems with low speed hairpins but you'll be turning and hand braking quite a lot, they make some odd sounds in reverse as well at low speed.

The autotests I attend are closer to autocross courses - handbrake isn't rewarding and there is no reversing. I don't think lifting a wheel is likely to be an issue unless I truly nail the suspension setup and we get a particularly tight and bumpy course.

I will speak to gripper about it, I think.

Does anyone know what maintenance intervals are like with the gripper? I wouldn't imagine the car doing more than 1-2k miles a year.

I'm basing mine on 2-3k per year road miles and say 10-12 sprints and a couple of track days a year you should see 3-5 years service intervals, I change oil every 6 months but that's the cheap Castrol mineral oil, you'll possibly find 1st/ 2nd synchros are the problem mine seam to be 2nd/3rd that take the worst abuse, so I look at the box on the Clio as the weakest link, the diff can be looked at at the same time.
There's a lad who's a GP and he gets 5 years out of his and he still uses the Renault 5 Turbo when he's on call and drives to all events:approve:

Hope this helps, regards Russ......
