Well those quotes are the current 2015 prices - I'm expecting them to increase next year for both the gripper and the Quaife. Now I'm fairly mechanically savvy and have done all my own rebuild so far, but gearboxes completely challenge me. So is the £1425 gripper delivered + megane 5th everything I need which is then a straight forward bolt on by yours truly? Or is there more specialist work needed as some people are referring to a £2k overall cost for this job?
Same question for the Quaife quote as well?
I'm assuming that buying a new cw&p means I can keep the original matched cw&p in case I want to sell the gripper+newer cw&p and revert the box in the future, our swap the box if it becomes foobar? I'm probably speaking b****cks here and will be shot down for being uneducated in the subject of gearboxes on here [emoji14] . More research needed me thinks.
Thanks for the help.
You'll need a few specialist tools to get the box open, but other than that they're actually quite a straight forward box to strip - assuming you've done a few already of course. They can be challenging if not.
The 2k bills that people are referring to is in relation to the rebuild price as well. These gearboxes like to wear the dog teeth on the gears instead of the synchro rings. Synchros are pence compared to the complete gear as I'm sure you'll appreciate.
I can't say if you could fit the diff yourself as I don't know your skill level or what tools you have. You will need a press and puller setup though to do the pinion. Do you know how to set up a bearing pre load on the shafts and diff as well? It's experience that helps on that one I'm afraid.
The Quaife reuses your original crownwheel so there's no way you could refit it to the original diff. With the gripper if you run the gripper cw&p you will be able to retain your original diff along with cw&p should you wish to swap it all out.
Worth noting that the Quaife and gripper have a lifetime warranty also.
I'll never shoot anyone down for asking questions mate! This is what the forum is for as far as I'm concerned. I'll help anyone out if I can.
