///M3 Detail & Write Up (Long Read)

  S4 Avant
Well, I had this one last Sunday, but only just got chance to sort through all the pictures for it.

Having watched me going over Addz's new mini, a friend asked me to detail his M3 for him... but we delayed it untill the nights drew out a bit.

So with the lovely weather we had last weekend, I set to work on the barge-tastic german thing.

Upon arrival:

Very clean to begin with, having only been washed the day before.

Today was more about the polishing, and trying to get a decent finish to the paintwork.

Having covered something daft like 130,000 miles, certain areas were worse than others.

So out with all my stuff!

Washed with the 2 bucket method and BTBM, although only one bucket can be seen...

Sills cleaned:

Clean car again

...and now moving onto the clay. I used a megs clay bar, as I prefer it to everything else I've tried. Can't get on with the softer clay bars, as they just fall apart in your hands.

Now, to Jons (owner) knowledge, the car had never been clayed, and he was fairly sure we would find a lot of overspray around the wheels. Since the dealer he bought it from sprayed the wheels while on the car

Going on this though, the car was incredibly clean. Clay wasn't picking anything up off the roof or sides of the car, worst affected area was along the lower half of the doors, behind the front and infront of the rear wheels.

5620666314_a7f4f9b83e.jpg

My roof alone gets dirtier than that!

5620082905_4563787010.jpg

Claying done. Mr Gray visible in the background, he's dweamy tbh.

5620674068_d48b6ec84d.jpg

Worst affected areas cleaned up nicely!

5620088809_31e79284b9.jpg

Washed again after claying, using the same process as before:

5620092625_4c34fc38b8.jpg

This time I remembered the fuel filler cap.

5620097267_56ae3323ac.jpg

Wheels cleaned with AG products and assortments of brushes. My long reach wheel brush actually struggled to reach the inside edge of the rear wheels!

5620691496_88a8f2257e.jpg

Engine bay was cleaned down with AG engine cleaner and plastics dressed with AG bumper care.

5620108737_4e163f5228.jpg

After pictures are a little sparse with the engine bay, since it was late by the time we finished everything.

Lovely dull tail pipes:

Again, after pictures weren't taken until end of the day

Car brought under shelter for polishing: (normally this is to keep it out of any potential rain, but today it was to keep it out of the heat!!)

Now recently, I've seen a lot of good results using lime prime, so thought I'd give it a try. Ordered in a new megs cutting pad as well, to try and combat the German paint.

Boot lid finished up:

5620133813_272bbdbc2d.jpg

Very pleased with the result.

There were very few swirls to begin with actually, but now even less!

Rear quarter done:

Sun gun? There's an App for that.

Now. The headlights. They had done many many miles, and they showed that they had done many many miles. Very dull, and the plastic was generally "frosty".

So....

Still not quite polished back up nicely^

Finished vs not finished:

Polishing all done:

Time for wax. This is where the minions stepped in and took over. I went for a shower, because I could.

Orange crush was the only hard wax I had to hand, so that did nicely. Smelt awesome too.

Superb Dave, what bloody country do you live in! Shades and vests! Oh and who actually wears a vest!

Thanks for posting up mate, LP is very underrated with the right pad combo it can give fantastic results although I always cleanse the paint afterwards due to the oily nature of LP but you were using Dodo anyway so will be fine.

Just love "greys" these days on performance cars.

LOL weather last weekend was stupidly good! Ended that evening with a barbecue and a beer.

Cheers for the pointers as well, was very impressed with LP!

Actually we had a beautiful weekend aswell last weekend I forgot. It was stupid degrees up here for April! Felt like July!

Hopefully more of that to come.

Yeah just a heads up on the LP, if you're using a different make of wax or a sealant cleanse the paint and just use the LP as your "polish" so to speak and let an actual cleanser prep the paint as a good base. The LSP will last much longer. :)

I stopped using the LP as a cleanser and only use it as a "polish" enhancement tool after experiencing durability issues with decent sealants. I then realised how oily the LP was. So my paint is always cleansed afterwards. :)

I can tell he's a gym boy, M3, vest, shorts, flip flops and shades.

Gym Boy!

Nice write up, I love everything about that car (but I wouldn't want cream seats).

Headlights were the biggest improvement IMO.

Oh, and gang colours? FLOL.

Lovely, truely a great looking car and 130+k miles? Awesome!

May I?

1200 is far too coarse for headllights fella. Far far far too coarse. Look at 2000 as an absolute max. You're not sanding down sharp edges, just bringing back the clarity. It will aid you in the long run as well as you will be able to polish them back up with one hit of a decent cutting compound, rather than a few.

All aimed to help rather than take away from what is truly a superb finish!

Thanks for sharing!

Very much a gym boy. Own business as well now!

Cheers! The seats were quite a rare option iirc

OOft.

Not sure which im more excited about tbh, the M3, or Gray in what appears to be a pair of deck shoes

If you look closely in some of the reflection shots, you can just make out the colossal erection I have over Kierans shorts and shoes combination

Question, what age is the car? With 130k+ on the clocks, interested to know the year... I would guess post 2004/5 as it has the LED rears, but I know they're a simple swap...?

FLOL... after 3 passes the realisation showed on Dave's face 'It's not polishing up... oh s**t, oh s**t'

Nice spot tbh, and yes, it did take a f*cking age to get them back again!

Last time I did mine I had 1500 and 2000 grit paper, which will explain why I was scratching my head when the M3 headlights weren't shining up as quickly!

Still, no damage done, just a lesson in time management. No where near as bad as the lad who tried 600 grit first as well!

53 plate seems to come to mind, but that's a complete stab in the dark.

Shush! My face only realised that I was being awesome.

you told me that was a detailing brush in your pocket!?!? :S

It was.... honest....

Nice car, nice detail!

Any close up shots of the exhausts? That's the only thing I really struggle with on mine! I tend to use autosol and an abrasive cloth, works ok but open to other suggestions.

Oh, and the facelift M3 was 53 plate, correct!

JD, you're such a wet and dry hater! (It's probably because you're polish lover)

This is something we really disagree on tbh!

1200 would be utterly fine to polish up if it was nice and wet, like soaking, as for 600 on ph1 headlights, that's standard.

Low grits aren't anything to be scared of as long as you work up through the numbers, some headlights are at a point where it'd take hours with 1200 to get them good (I know these ones weren't but I'm just feeling argumentative).

Not got many good ones, but I know what you mean about the exhausts, they're a really dull finish anyway, made worse by dirt and grime.

That was after autosol, a bit of cloth and a lot of effort. After I finished I buffed them off with a MF and they came up nicely.

looking clean
the top of my headlights are quite dull, feel quite rough. is there an everyman way of fixing this, ie without an electric polisher?

You aren't ever going to get perfect results by hand, but you could try a very light grade sandpaper, like 2000+ and then SRP.

It will take you a while to get them glossy again though if you're only doing it by hand

Haha, you numpty. x

I love wet and dry paper. Love it.

Hate the misuse of it. 600 then polish? Fark off. 1200 then polish? You'll be there for days and might incurr damage that is irreparable (no offense Dave).

The simple fact is, paint correction and plastic correction is an art. And the art of it is to remove as little of the top coat as possible. It is the same for plastics. You use the least aggressive method possible first and up it if required.

I wouldn't polish a Clio with a wool pad and Fast Cut Plus because I had them to hand. I'd work out which was the best cut based on time, results and paint condition.

Same with plastics. I'm bringing back the clarity, not sanding down a few milimetres to gain a smooth surface.

But meh, you're a Southern C Unit and I'll tell you in person when you buy me that "welcome to the Sarf" pint you mentioned... ;) x
