Mac Server

  Scirocco GT 2.0
Morning,

Quick enquiry:

We are getting 14 Macs with music tech software and hardware ie. Logic, Sibelius, MIDI Keyboards etc etc plus the usual stuff like Mac Office in the summer along with a Mac Pro to act as a server for those 14 machines which will then link to our windows based network.

This is the best way as apparently there are horror stories with Macs communicating directly with the windows based network and also it gives us a seperate data store for music tech alone.

Does any one have any experience with Mac Server?

We don't so we are going to create some virtual images between now and the summer to play and self teach plus we will most probably get ourselves on some course,s but any info would be great.

Peace out.

You can connect to shares on Windows servers directly from the Macs. You don't really need a Mac server as such. Just an added expense for what you want to do.
You won't have any issues connecting to shares if you set up the share permissions correctly and set the following in the local security policy on each file server:

Microsoft Network Server: Digitally sign communications (Always) - set to disabled
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally sign communications (If client agrees) - set to enabled.

To set the share permissions up, create local user accounts on the file servers and grant them the required level of access (read, write, full control, etc..) Then use those credentials when connecting to the shares. If you just want simplicity you could just grant everyone full control.
Up to you really, but Mac OS X (especially 10.4 and later) has had a lot of the issues to do with networking with Windows machines ironed out. A lot of our customers have Windows file servers and Mac workstations and never have any problems.

Thanks for the info!

I still think we're better off keeping it self contained and linking Mac AD to Microsoft AD for user accounts etc and implement group policy settings to restrict access to certain things..

Creating some VMWare images at the moment so will see how it goes

I am officially preparing for the burning of 14 iMacs and a Mac Pro. Bonfire anyone?!

It's driving us crazy. Getting AD to talk to OD is like trying to make Winston Churchill talk to Hitler around a dining table with lap dancers and Cigars.

AAAAAAAhhh
