Machine polisher confusion!

  Monaco 172
Hopefully some of you guru's can help me out a little here.

First of all, I understand that there are different types of polisher, Dual action, rotary etc?

What's the differences?

I like to clean my car with some good quality products but swirl marks let it down big time.

Is machine polishing my paintwork myself going to damage/burn through?

What's the best type of beginner polisher that is easy to use, gives good results but isn't really dangerous to be used by a noob.

Sorry for all the questions, any help greatly achieved!

With dual action, you will have to try VERY hard to damage/burn the paint.

With rotarys you have to be much more careful.

Ive got a DA G220, Ive had no problems at all. For beginners I would recommend a DA polisher :)

Polisher = w**k Halfords tat. Avoid
Dual action = Random orbital. It's basically hand polishing on speed+red bull+coke.
Rotary = Round and round and round. Quick cutting circular action.

Or for a better description:

Machine polishing by DA guide
Machine polishing by rotary guide

Yes you could, you've more chance with a rotary and would have to really badly try hard to get a DA to burn through. It had happened but it's rare.

A DA is the best "My first machine polisher", personally I recommend the Kestrel DAS-6, but the Megs G220 is also good or if you want old school the PC 7424.

Best advice is to read lots, those guides above are extremely helpful, and ask questions.

Thanks very much Symon.

The kestrel sounds to be the favored machine everywhere I look.

Can anyone reccomend me some polish/pad starter kits for soft renault paint?

Thanks again for your help people.

As you said renault paint is soft, so a Lake Country polishing pad and some sfx-2 and final finish works well. Had good results with that on mine.

Saying Renault paint is soft is a sweeping statement - Black Gold certainly isn't, and neither is the Deep Black on my R27.

As said on DW, go for Menz Polishes and Sonus Pads - best learner combo IMO.

Exactly what i just bought a few weeks ago with a Kestrel DAS-6 :rasp:

Well happy with it.

Got a deep black too!

The man speaks sense. Although i dont like the sonus pads lol Much prefer the lake country ones...

I started off with a megs G220 and then bought a Kestrel SIM180 rotory polisher. Best thing to do IMO! Learn the basics with the DA then buy a rotory as they are 100 times faster.

Exactly! Defo step up to a man's polisher (Rotary) ASAP so that you don't need to spend 67 hours and an overly aggressive combo via DA.

The Kestrel is a beast though Booshy, I'm going to get a CP from CYC

Lol you *****. I want a Makita :( Im still to do my car too! Didn't even bother with it when i put it in the megs competition lol :D

Yours looks pretty awesome though man. Skills! (more than me anyway!)

Would you reccommend me an expensive (circa £60-£70) via pm please as i only use collonite lol:eek:

  Megane R26
The Makita is that different though to be honest - it's a bit smoother, and maybe a touch lighter. It does feel nicer to use, but not £100 nicer. The CP is a LOT lighter and easier to control, so it's what I'd get for £180ish.

It's got to be Saphir for that kind of money, or Titanium from Zymol. Nowt wrong with Colli tbh. Have you tried any sealants?

  Porsche Boxster987S
believe me , not all reno paint is soft. My Kestral DA really struggled on the megane:( Rotary needed tbh

Luke tell me you use sealents??? If not you have gone down a notch in my books. That's notch -1 ;)

Lol sorry mate I'm not too sure what sealents are .

I use polish>EGP/Carlack nano (which im guessing are sealents) then wax on top of that.

Oh and STFU

 n00b lol.

EGP and Carlack, depending on what you're using mate, are sealants...but there are much better out there IMHO. A sealant does what it says on the tin, it seals the paintwork after you've finished doing all your hardwork and protects it from the elements whilst also giving a great amount of gloss/wet look and beads like a motherf**ker. Some people only seal, some people only wax or some do both. I prefer the results of doing both and the durability.

Search on DW you'll find a s**t load of sealant v wax threads and arguments for and against both.

Ah right. Didn't know they were called sealents lol. I always just called them protection

Bit of a bump to save starting a new thread.

What to buy, DA polisher or foam lance and a new sealent?

Arghhh

Depends. If your paint needs correcting and you are going to get the use out of a DA then buy a DA. If not save yourself some cash and pay someone else to detail your car for you, including machine polishing it, and then you can just stay on top of it with some decent products.

im currently looking at investing in a machine polisher and looks like the kestrel is a hands down winner for beginners then saved me starting my own thread

If you are a newbie to detailing/machine polishing get a DA. You will be very hard pushed to burn through paint with these machines and they are great all round machines. I still love my Porter Cable, use it to this day as I have the time to get round a car like a Clio. Anything larger takes considerably longer with a DA, so looking to purchase a Makita or Silver Storm this month for larger projects (like the 2 black and carbon R8s booked in ;))
