magnetic painted side strips?

would anybody get any if a company were to produce them? for instance cars like mine where they have had smoothing work are vunerable in car parks to dickheads that dont care. it would be great if a company were to make some universal side strips which would be magnetic so you could take them off for shows/meets but still be able to colour code them to your car so as a daily it wouldnt look poo.

Great idea but, if your car was less that perfectly clean, you would end up scratching the paint when you attached and removed them, and some scrote would pinch them.

thing is thou i have to put up with car parks everyday and theres only a few times where you can get away with parking in 2 spaces. im sure the manufactor would find a way like a release mech or something along the lines not to scratch the paintwork. it just really fooks me off to see new dents there when i make every possiable effort to park correctly and make sure i dont swing my door out to damage someone elses. it would just be nice to have that security there for cars that dont have them but for shows/meets or for pics could easily take them off.

You can be sure that wherever you put the strip, the dent would be in another place. Side strips don't work because car doors are all different heights.

The principle thing here is that you are giving people the option, the fact they are magnetic means it is only a 2 second job to fit or remove.

I agree, if you could overcome the scratch/theft issues, I'm sure people would buy them.

Aren't the normal strips plastic? magnets wouldnt hold onto the plastic? or would they cover the strips and a bit of the door above and below?

Good idea though, I hate parking at supermarkets for that exact reason.

it would be interesting to see if anybody actually could make them and what price they would be! i would defo get a set. the manufactor could do them in different lenths and widths to suit. i would 100 % have a set if they were tested with various speeds and weather conditions.

They could be indentical to RS strips, just removeable.

As for the issue of them coming off, perhaps they could be held on with strong magnets, suckers or made so the clip around the front and rear edge of the door.

In terms of manufacturing these... There's companies that sell the magnetic numberplates... speak to them. But the colour match will be awful! You'll never get them to look good. If you sprayed them the same colour as the car as soon as you flexed them the paint would crack. Plus they'd probably fade quicker than the cars paint.

Plus the paint behind the patches wouldn't fade like the rest of the car and you'd have massive patches down the side of your car that would stick out like a sore thumbs!

Sorry to "piss on your fire" so to speak... if there was a way of protecting against car park dings that was fail proof i'm sure everyone would be all ears and the "inventor" would make a large fortune!

I found my alarm on 1 of my previous cars which have proximity sensors did actually deter people away from it... for example, parked outside my office (shop front recruitment) people walking past it would get close, it'd go off then they'd move away from it!!!!

Ah, ok. I'm now with it. Still, the paint underneath it would look brand new when you took them off in comparison to the rest of the car.

And i'm not being rude, but if your car is an everyday car (not a show car), you park in car parks everyday and you're that worried about car park dings surely your best bet would be to leave the std door mouldings on it!?!?!?

If you think about it door moulding don't do that much these days, a lot of dents are higher up.

I work in a body shop and it's noticeable.

Oh without a doubt... But I'm just puzzled as to why you'd remove them then want to use magnetic ones to try and protect from dents!?

You can buy those black rubber sticking strips... why not get a few of them, use the stickiness to stick a strip magnet to it, spray them your cars colour and stagger them down your door????!!!!

I don't get the idea of having a car modified just for shows... so for 360 days of the year you drive around with s**te looking things on your car to protect it from stone chips etc ie bonnet bra's only to remove it for 5 days a year for a few shows!?!? Maybe i'm getting old.

the idea for the strips is so it looks o.e like the standard strips but there removeable so you dont have any holes/recess but still to have the protection for when your using it as a daily. the side strips would have to be paintable ones and i dont see why you couldnt get a good colour match. it would be just the same as colour coding the standard fitment ones or like colour coding the plastic on bumpers for instance. granted not always you get a bang on match but you can get it very close if done proffesionally.

the reason ive removed the side strips is so the car looks alot flusher/smooth. as do alot of people who make show cars but some have to use them as dailys and car parks are a nightmare. i think if its done it would be a great solution. it may not deflect/absorb every ding but its the best thing you could do to prevent it while still keeping an o.e look.

It won't help. If you're that bothered about your show car either buy a banger or cover it in bubble wrap.

They'll fall off/stolen and won't protect your car.

There is another way to do the magnets ofcourse. You put very strong magnets on the inside of the door skin and the same magnets positioned at the opposite polarity in the strip.
The bond would be extremely strong and they would also self align.

I've realised that the theft problem wouldn't be an issue because if they didn't look like an add on, no one would think to try and pull them off.

There is a thread on here that was started buy some guy whose Neighbour kept denting his car, someone suggested some pads or inflatable side strips, and give a link to the website for them... think they may do the job but they have to be removed while driving and then replaced when parked. Would prob become a bit of a pain to keep doing it.
