Main Dealer puts on aftermarket oil filter!!!

  Honda ATR
Just wondering what i should do!! I bought my 2005 182 back in August from a main renault dealer and it needed a 2year service before I could pick it up,so they carried out the service. Ive been checking the oil once a month but never really looked at the filter, last week i was checking it again and noticed it had a cheap Motorqraft one instead of a genuine part.

As using non gen parts invalidates the warranty what should I do?

It won't invalidate the warranty if the work is carried out by a Renault main agent.

Yes, they are crafty f*****s...

They did the service, i know this because i checked the oil when i picked it up!!

Do you think I should ring the dealer and make a complaint?

They had the car for a week before i picked it up. Ive been in the trade now for 6 years and garages like Slaters give everyone a bad rep...Idiots.

I wouldnt mind so much if id bought a crappy old shed but i spent nearly 10k...

You asked them to service it, they serviced it.

Did you ask them to use Gen parts? Prob not.

Did you look over the car to make sure you were satisfied before you handed over the £10,000?
If so, you should have said, ''i'll come back and collect it when you've put a genuine renault filter on it, give me a call''

I see your point, im in the trade myself, when you buy from a franchised dealer you shouldn't need to go round checking they have used genuine parts. If Engine were to lock up i imagine there could be complications with warranty claims.

I agree with you 100% mate.

BUT 90% of the motor trade are incredibly stupid, therefore i would be checking every nut and bolt before i handed over £10,000 of my hard earned!

What I was getting at is that when you buy a motor from a dealer you expect them to behave in a certain way, thats why you pay the premium! so why should I have to ask them to use gen parts. At the end of the day they fitted an inferior part and if something was to go wrong id probably end up forking the bill.......It just shows that you cant trust anyone.

indeed, so would I, i wouldn't buy from a franchised dealer, simply because you are paying for their flash premises and complimentary coffee, i think it might be worth phoning them to make sure a note is made that a non Gen one is fitted, then if a warranty claim occurs your in a much more favourable position, i wouldn't worry about the quality etc as an oil filter is an oil filter. Just be peace of mind for yourself.

Ive just rang the dealer and told them what I found, and they said that the filter they fitted was within the quality guidelines.

thats not a problem then. Least you Don't have to worry. I would want it in writing from the Service manager to really put your mind at rest though.

Afaik most non-genuine filters have less filter 'particles' (or whatever they are called) therefore don't filter oil as well.

If the engine failed under warrenty you can be sure they would claim you fitted a non-genuine filter thus voiding the warrenty.

im not surprised they used an aftermarket one. my local dealer just puts in conventional texaco oil from a drum regardless of what car you take it.

take your car to somewhere trustworthy next time lol

I couldn't get a gen renault filter for mine once, ended up fitting an after market 1. 3 weeks later it blew the oil out through the rubber seal on the filter. New engine later and I will never use a non gen filter again!

sounds more like not tightened properly. There is nothing inferior about them.

Probably the opposite actually. Think it mite have been 2 tight. But when we took it off the inside looked different from the renault, there's a lip on the genuine 1 which in my opinion would help it seal better!

where do you get this information from?

Someone on here a while ago, can't remember where they worked but he said the first thing they look at when a car comes in with a blown engine under warranty is whether its got a genuine filter, if not they void the warranty.

Not sure if thats true for all car warranties though.
