Manual Steering Conversion on Valver

Ok my power steering pump is almost dead so im thinking of gettin a manual conversion which would also free that little bit more power.

Basically i want to know how much it will cost in parts and what parts are going to be needed and how i go about doing it, how long it takes etc.

Many Thanks,

Craig

You'll need a manual rack from a lesser clio (12/1.4 etc) along with a manual column (PAS column is shorter). Beyond that you'll need to get a bracket for the alternator and a shorter AUX belt...'bondy' on here is the only person i know that does these parts.

Price wise...bondy's kit is 50quid and you can get a manual rack and column for under a tenner from a scrappy. Theres no problems using these s/h parts as the manual stuff doesn't suffer the same wear as their PAS equivelents(i.e column going loose) Beyond that its just labour...subframe will need dropped so budget for that...

i wasnt keen at first with it, but after a few laps round the track its spot on!! More than happy now!

It's not as bad as eveyone thinks...its obviously heavier but no heavier than say a 1.2 with equivalent size tyres on.

i run a standard 1.2 rack and column on the TT and its ace - no hassle with pas pipes splitting or pumps leaking etc

^^true!

less hassle!

steering is suprisingly ok! just requires a bit more effort when moving slowly! fine once moving tho! just feels heavy compared if u go from PS to manual!

its only me 2nd car so not fussed! it was great on track tho! thats the first time iv proper tested it out!

just requires 2 hands on the wheel instead of 1!

Well i got mine (both items) for 7quid from my scrappy so i guess it depends where you go...off a p-reg too! Fair enough i had to remove them myself in the pissing rain but still...

^^Actually if its that uncommon to get them that cheap i might start sourcing them for poeple and make myself some cash lol

im off to the scrappy tommorow then for a column was wondering if the alternator bracket off the diesel clio would fit....

ok still a bit confused lol. so im going to need a column and rack, alternator bracket (but what off???) and a belt (what off)
Anyone fancy doing it for me lol what has to be done for it? any rough prices what costs wil be?
cheers

Plattsy, this is the problem r.e the belt and bracketry - only bondy knows what car the new brackets come off and only he sells the kits. If you buy one off him you'll find that he's even filed the part numbers off them (2 brackets). Fair enough i suppose as he's worked it out but a pain none-the-less for everyone else! There was word that the bracketry came off a volvo of some description but thats where the info ends...tor the 50quid that his kits costs you'd save yourself a lot of hassle though.

I have for sale in the workshop a full Clio Cup steering rack steering column and also the idler pulley that replaces the power steering pump so that std alternator/ancillary belt can be used. The rack needs new gators and rod ends. The lots for sale. Guy whose race car it came from want £175.00

Doesn't the volvo 440 run the same/similar block to the rsi and im pretty sure there pretty similar to the f7 engine block....

Do you go to the scrappy by tesco? If so its great (everything is a great price) I quite often go there for a few bargains :D.

Thats the one...the guy who runs it seems to have no idea what things are worth...or just can't be arsed haggling. Great place tho!

To have the rack ovehauled by the company I use will cost £65.00 plus vat. The rack column and idler pulley all came of a Clio 16v from the Clio cup. The rack has less turns lock to lock. Give me a ring for a quote.
