Matched inlets and remap - Do you tell your insurance company?

  172 Flamer
I imagine the answer to this is going to be yes, but I'll ask anyway. If you get a remap and matched inlets done to your clio, should you notify your insurance company that it has had these modification done to it, despite there possibly not being much or any increase in BHP? If you do tell them, what incrase in BHP do you tell them it has?

For just the inlets, why bother as its pretty much impossible to tell its done. The remap, yes I would. It doesn't necessarily add fortunes on eg I got a quote for a BMW 330d with and without a remap. It added £15 to the premium and a remap on something like that would add the total torque of a 172 :p.

Matched inlets inst really adding anything, merely removing some metal on an OEM part to smoothen it out. Not so sure you would have to declare it to be honest (Lets face it these cars never make what they say on the tin so if anything it's getting it to the quoted factory figures)

The map I would probably declare but it is difficult to detect so

Ask yourself this:

Do you want your insurance to be worth the paper is it written on?

Yes - Declare all changes

No - Good luck in life

Predict replies of: "But you can always remove the ramap before the insurers assess the car"... when you are in the back on an ambulance that'll probably be the last thing on your mind.

I know a few assessors, and they wouldn't check the management on the car. FACT! It's mainly visual mods. Obviously SKY will tell you otherwise ;)

Ask said assessors what sort of investigations they do if there is a high value claim with PI costs involved.. You may think you know what you are talking about Jonny but you clearly do not.. and how would you feel if someone took your post as gospel, didn't disclose, had a claim, ran someone over and then got hit with the PI claim.. they could be financially crippled for a very long time.. Seems a bit silly when it could be declared at a negligable cost doesn't it? Nice post!

years ago, probably wouldn't have bothered. Now, Insurance is so reluctant to pay out they will do you over for the smallest thing.

Good policies will often allow a 5-10% power increase before it costs extra anyway

I know of a certain large insurance company that still pays out (albeit less than they could potentially) if mods haven't been declared. I'm by no means stating not to bother, at the end of the day it's up to the individual. I have my mods declared, so i'm not bothered either way, it's just an observation through experience with assessors. Get off your high horse ;) Are you seriously saying that if a car "looks" standard that an assessor would plug into an ECU and know what the map codes are etc? More to the point would they remove the inlet mani and know it had been ported? or know that cams we're standard. They just don't have the time to do these things.
You can appreciate peoples reluctance to not covering mods as most insurance companies won't cover the mods themselves, so if you do crash, you would get a standard car back, or money depending on the claim/car value.

this seems to me very stupid . First off all , the company who makes the remap doesn`t all the time put the car on the rollers so you only have their word for the bhp increase .
Second the 172 makes 150-160 bhp on the rollers ,not even close to 172 or 169 .With the remap the gains are close to 165-169 ...
Second , you add an exhaust manifold or a decat or a catback , how do you know how much power did you gain ?
Third , you bought the car from someone that didn`t told you that the car is remapped .
Forth you can put the car on 4 different rollers and get 4 different results with nothing related between them .
Fifth the most precise dyno measuring is the whp , but the car has the bhp declared so in the loss of transmision calculation from the whp + transmision loss the bhp result can be whatever you want it to be :))
Sixth if the chiptuner declares a 25% power gains from a N/A engine wich is really bulls**t you will pay for 25% more power even if your gains are no more than 6-7 bhp ?You also need an official opinion from a Renault dealer/specialist that can for 100% declare that the car isn`t remaped because the ECU can have various calibrations that don`t look alike and only a Renault specialist, and I believe they are very few can tell you for sure that the car is remapped or not ,and if the car is remmaped can you assure me that it isn`t a ECO remapping ?:D

I'm off to a big Jap car show in a moment so I'll have to bow out of this conversation but just a few things:

A decent insurer will cover modifications on a like for like basis
Insurers can and will do some very careful investigations in the event of a claim, more so if the susupect foul play and almost certainly if there is a high value claim
A remap is easier to sport than you think
When you need your insurance most (think back of an ambulance scenario) you'll regret not declaring a simple remap.

But the main point, why all the fuss when there are many, many insurers out there who cater for modified cars?

If one person reads this and wises up, that's good enough for me.

That's fair enough Ollie. At the end of the day, people should make their own choices as to how they play the insurance game. Personally I wouldn't risk it as because my car has obvious modifications, it alerts to the posibility of others. My isurance company know mine, but weren't interested in what models/specs etc they were. Not sure if that means they will be covered like for like though.

It's always an interesting discussion though. Enjoy the jap day :D

Aside from trying to drive the wreck, how would the assessor be led to thinking any internal engine work would have happened?

Srre, if there's a huge cone filter and a 7-inch exhaust then they'd have reason to suepect but if it look OEM (including the engine cover) then would it be unlikely to attract the attention?

By matching your inlets you are only doing a job that Renault should have done in the first place but did it the French way instead.

I wouldn't declare these mods and would love to know an assessor that could spot matched inlets. These guys are not going to strip an engine down to see if they can wriggle out of a claim. They probably wouldn't know the difference without looking at a before and after anyway.

ive declared both of these mods on mine. i have a friend whos car has modified yet hasnt declared all. so far hes got away with it. personally i dont want to run the risk. if (lets hope it doesnt happen) we both have a crash i know i can relax as mine has been declared. when your at the side of the road with your car temperately unavailable your not going to have time to change over the parts to the non declared stuff. better to be safe than sorry.

i can see what people are saying as in how would insurers tell inlets have been ported or car remapped but if for some reason they do and it all goes t!ts up on your claim you'd be gutted that you didnt declare something that probably wont go up by much on your insurance.

When mine was supercharged it cost an extra £100 over a standard 172! Very much worth declaring everything!

I hope sky insurance take people's usernames and see what they post and then deny insurance for being so ignorant!

what do u do if you have got the car second hand and dont know its past ? as in if it has had the inlets matched or a re map etc ??

  Ly 230 meg & Ph2 172
Really ?? if u buy it as a standard car u cant tell by looking at it ! would have to take it to a garage to be looked at etc ! I personally think its a real grey area! i know u can see things like filters, 4" pipes.......

My old Williams 3 I declared all mods, but when I sold it, the lad said to me, how come it revs to 6,800 - I said, I think some are like that, esp when hot. Turns out, for the 3 years I owned the car it was chipped, but I genuinley never knew. It was only confirmed when he looked within the ECU housing - but I was told it was standard and took it at that. I had declared my springs, shocks, exhaust and brakes - if I had, had a crash and refused payout I would have been gutted. What else is 'funny' is I drove that car for 3 years changing up at 6,500 when I had a bit more to play with. As I was never bothered about mapping it etc, I never checked.

Tell your insurance company EVERYTHING.

I'm pretty sure I'm paying an extra few hundred quid for my remapped VX220. Worth it for the peace of mind :)

You want to get on with brentacre. They are the best insurance company I have ever used. I declared everything on my 182, even my c2 aerial! It's well worth doing tbh.

Jesus Christ, some of the people in here are either massive e-hero's or just ridiculously sad.

I've never met you, but seriously, if I worked at an insurers and you phoned me up to tell me that, I'd be more worried about the mass or drugs you were obviously taking than the shorter aerial you've fitted to your car.

i wouldnt say anything personally. On any mod! Because im young, they would charge me through the roof if i add anything else to it. Its expensive how it is!!! Just keep your mouth shut and protest your innocense if anything comes up that i very much doubt will! I can say that 90% people i know with mods dont declare! But im young and have young mates so they cant really afford to declare. Everyone wants more power though so saying that you shouldnt get the mod if you cant afford to declare would be wrong as i knew someone who wanted to put a k&n cone filter on his zetec s at 18 was told by his insurers that he had to wait till he was 21 to do that! unless he wanted to pay an extra £600!! There just money theiving b******s who want to rip you off for all you got because there greedy! And they know they can get away with doing it because they can!
