matched inlets

  clio 172 no2/ yzf r1
is it wise to have my inlets matched as my car has a remap, induction kit,cat back system,or will the car have to be mapped again when this has been done

and also is it something u can do in the garage or is it 1 for the proffessionals

If you were looking for utter perfection in the map, then anything that changes the airflow at a given manifold pressure will mean that the ECU cant see it.
In reality though, a couple of percent (at best realistically) change in airflow is so minor that it wont be an issue generally.
No one can say for certain though as your car might be literally right on the edge of det now on your current map and that tiny bit of extra air could push it over the edge (straw that broke the camels back and all that)

General rule of thumb: Just fit them and they'll be fine.

As for who should do it, fitting is pretty straight forward, hour or so for someone vaguely competant with spanners.
With regards to doing the actual port matching though, I'd try and go to someone with a decent history of porting heads and inlets etc not some of the "renault specialists" who have a crack at it with a die grinder and no real skill.

If you go to MWM for example, their matched inlets are done by Neil Roper, who is ex formula 1 from back in the days when people got properly hands on with this stuff (he's even in pits in the senna film, lol) and the work is absolutely superb, although may involve a few weeks wait as there is more demand for work of that quality than supply of it!

MWM are planning in the near future to get them done in batches I beleive, when they can get a chunk of Neils Time in one go.

so does this mean that maps are only programmed for so long?
and i hope my car aint on the edge of detonation as its cost me 1100 notes in the last 5 weeks

Personally i wouldnt waste my time fitting matched inlets, in terms of power i'm yet to see the gains for my own eyes. Well, more than 1hp peak that is.

I mean that your map might be a bit close to the edge to begin with so it could be the thing that tips it, but thats highly unlikely on one of these engines.
I am loathed to make a sweeping "it will be fine" statement when there is just a tiny tiny possibility that it might not.

As an idea, heres a RR printout from RsTuning

P1010550.jpg

Red- initial run
Green- timing corrected
Pink- inlets fitted
Blue- mapped

If you look closely at it, I think I gained at the top end slightly but lost slightly in the middle until it was mapped so a live map will probably bring that little bit more out but not much

I was looking for that :)

I was actually thinking of fitting matched inlets but dont think i will bother now!

What mods would you recommend to have before coming to yourself for a remap paul?...the usual breathing mods such as a good cat back system, filter, and perhaps a decat?

Sorry for the hijack

My housemate and I both had Ph1's back in the day

Popped to JamSport one morning. Had our own inlets taken off, CNC'd and re-fitted with the PTFE gaskets.

We both saw 2-3mpg increase difference on the way home and both said the same thing - much nicer to drive and pulls much better across the revs.

HOWEVER - it did take a few miles to feel like this !! We both said it felt horrible for about 15-20 miles, but I guess the ECU was adjusting to the new airflow rates ?! Maybe this is why it doesn't show on the rolling road ?!

Before mine was sluggish below 3k, 3-5k was ok and 5+ was the kick and off it went. After fitting, it pulled hard from 1500RPM to the redline !

Well worth the £150 or whatever it was to me.

Its hard for me to comment on that because I had a remap at the same time, so it never got driven between fitting and mapping and was only on the RR with Paul. Otherwise, I agree with everything you have said but mine could be due to the timing, inlets or mapping.

I noticed a definite power improvement on my PH-1 172 after fitting a set of Angel Works matched inlets.

Noticeably smoother to drive.

Increased MPG.

At RStuning my PH-1 172 made 187.4bhp / 167ft.lb with JUST matched inlets, ITG panel filter, Yozzasport race system and a cup aux set-up.

Main thing to bare in mind is that NOT all matched inlets are equal.

Some are just some clueless chancer with a dremel trying their best, some are expertly crafted for a good improvement in airflow right though the whole runner.

I would expect not to have the same results from the two types!

Pretty much what I was going to say!

I'd like to back to back some CNC'd ones to be sure but i'm sticking with my theory at the moment until proved otherwise!

I had mine properly cnc'd. ie. Not just the around the ports. The lower inlet is fully ported, The plenum is ported as far round as the machine would reach, and also into the TB also for good measure :). Noticed a difference on the rollers with mine. Same rollers, with putting my BTB system on as well - 10bhp and 15lbft more. Not much, but it's something

I'd be happy with that increase.

Want to go for the 519 cams and matched inlet package but its a lot of money.

Labour isnt cheap to do cams on these cars just because its quite time consuming, the cars now being cheap doesnt make working on them any cheaper sadly, so it makes it hard to justify spending the whole value of the car being spent again just to get a moderate increase.

Personally if I was going for matched inlets I'd go for a proper set done by someone with the right background TBH, like the MWM ones which are done by Neil Roper who is a complete legend in porting terms and is ex Formula 1 from back in the days when people were properly hands on with engines, if he was good enough for senna he is good enough for me, lol, although im sure Danny does his best so am not knocking him for giving it a go, im sure they are still better than nothing :)

What are they paying you? i don't think i've seen a thread you've posted in the past 2 weeks where you havent mentioned MWM or Neil Roper!!

Just giving an honest opinion about the best person to use for the job, nothing in it for me either way, just like people to enjoy their cars.
