ok, so here is how i did it with some pics which have been taken off my blackberry phone, which has the camera quality of a webcam that you find in a christmas cracker, so sorry for the quality.
please note i am no pro, the outcome will not be as good as that of a pro such as angelworks. also thanks to ben at angelworks for answering my questions so fast. this is simply to show people how to do it in there spare time if there a bit poor, if your seeking top results, put down the spanner and take it a specialist.
before getting ready to work we needed some spec bits from B&Q, if you dont have a dremmel, then get one. now you need to buy a bit like this:
and id advise a dremel starter pack if you didnt already have one cos you will need the sanding bits which jus looks like a little strip of sand paper over a tube.
first things first is getting the thing off. i have seen alot of people on here asking for tips and tricks to this as the guides people put on just tell you how to take a bolt out, which is not whats needed.
now im not saying loads cos il be here all day so common sense is needed. first diss con the battery encase you disturb a sensor etc, then take off cover, coil pack block, breather pipes, and airbox with the inlet pipe, i took off the throttle body aswell but not sure if it was needed.
im not saying how to do this becouse its clear as day.
now the plenum must come off, raz the bolts out and lift up, carfull not to mallet the plenum to inlet manifold join as there is a small dowl going though the gasket:
once off you shall notice the plenum hasnt the best ports either:
now if you want to you can match the plenum to manifold. i didnt as we were working in the middle of the morning and my bro had work in a few hours but you guys could.
here you can see i put some tape over the inlet manifold to stop s**t going into the ports. and wrapped the throttle body in a plastic bag.
ok so now for the nobby bit, raz off the bolts holding the mani to the head, there is a couple under to the far left which are a little hidden. now you will notice it still isnt budging, this is becouse its a c**k! and has the top mount holding it down and the altonator bracket! now im sure there is other ways to go, one way is to jack the engine a bit and take off the top mount, we simply got pissed off cos it was early in the morning so we got out the engine hoist!
as you can see we jus rigged the chains up to the lifting points, took the mount off and lifted the engine, now got a bar off somekind and push the engine over to the passenger side of the bay.
this will give much easyer access to the side bolt which is a *****! you will find it down behind the bit of carpet which is randomly there? once you have done this its still pretty tight so me being me took a wooden mallet and tapped the manifold on the side to knock it in the direction of the passenger side. if i have missed anything its becouse its proboblly to clear to see that its pointless writing about.
this was the state of the inlet manifold, as you can see its a sack of s**t.
now with this method we are not doing a complete match as that require removing the head, now with most cars you would do this but with 172's its just a case that a heads have been port and polished and are really good, and the inlet mani was sold to renault by opium farmer!
see, tasty stuff.
so now all we need to do is get the inlet manifold looking like the ports on the head! remember this is no where near as good as taking it to a pro. so what we did, was made up a template over the ports on the head, remember to block up the ports first to stop s**t getting in them, now we used some flexible flat plastic and a stanley knife. it was cut outs of parafin containers to be the honest, like the containers you get 5L of screen wash in. we screwed this to the head the made cuttings till it was about 98% acurate, then placed these cuttings on the mani and screwed them in position, start grinding with the special bit at the top of this thread then get a nice finnish with the sander bits. again people may say this is bodged but its better than standard and cost little, the rules are simple, dont change the head, dont make the mouth of the manifold bigger than the mouth on the head as this will create a lip. once finished it will look a little like this:
and put her all back together using a new inlet gasket. just use reverse order we found no problems when fixing back up. the plenum gasket in most cases can be reused.
and there you go, hope this sheds some light for people worryed to do a bit of DIY. o and sorry for the spelling im hopeless.
